Art 1

This semester introductory survey course is the prerequisite for Drawing 1, Painting 1, and Figure Sculpture 1. Students are introduced to the visual arts through instruction in drawing, sculpture, architecture, painting, printmaking and art history. This course will focus on the elements of art through hands-on experiences.

Drawing 1 (P)

This introductory semester drawing course introduces the student to the basic materials, procedures, drawing techniques, and skills used in the drawing mediums. In order to acquire these skills, students have to be aware of the beauty in everyday life and its transformation to personal artistic language. The visual art elements and principles of design will be emphasized and developed through various drawing projects. UC/CSU approved

Painting 1 (P)

Course ID: 131

This semester course, when taken with Painting 2, fulfills the UC Fine Arts requirement. The course introduces students to the basic materials, procedures, painting techniques, and skills used in painting. The course is designed to develop student's observation, imagination, and creativity through artistic expression. Using the vocabulary of visual arts, students will also gain the ability to analyze and respond to various works, including their own. Through critiques, students will display the ability to aesthetically value and appreciate works of painting, as well as understand the relationship between art, culture and history. UC/CSU approved

Painting 2 (P)

The class builds upon the techniques learned in Painting 1 and introduces the student to basic acrylic techniques. Students are encouraged to explore different paint media to develop their own style. Figure Sculpting 1 (P)

Course ID: 105

This semester course, when taken with Figure Sculpting 2, fulfills the UC Fine Arts requirement. This course presents an overview of figurative sculpture from the Egyptians to the Renaissance and introduces students to various approaches and theories. There will be an introduction of the muscular and skeletal systems of the human body so that the student may begin to understand the human body as a cohesive whole, and learn to use it as a means of artistic expression. UC/CSU approved

Figure Sculpting 2 (P)

Course ID: 106

This class, when taken with its prerequisite, Figure Sculpture 1, fulfills the UC requirement for Fine Arts. In this class will study the ever-changing sculptural human form throughout the Modern era. This is both a course in modern art history as well as a studio art course. In researching the cultural, historical and technical aspects of modern sculptures, the students will access an extensive palate of sculptural styles. This course will also examine the various materials and techniques used to create such works. UC/CSU approved

This course offers the time, facilities and guidance to advanced art students in drawing, painting or sculpture who wish to invest more time into creating their individual works of art. AP Art History (AP)

Course ID: 192

The Advanced Placement offering in Art History is designed to provide the same benefits to high school students as those provided by an introductory college course in art history: an understanding and enjoyment of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within historical and cultural contexts. In the course, students examine major forms of artistic expression from the past and the present from a variety of cultures. Students will learn to look at works of art critically, with intelligence and sensitivity, and analyze what they see. Students are required to take the AP Exam in the spring. UC/CSU approved

Acting 1

Acting 1 is a semester introductory course that explores applications of acting theories and techniques to scripts of realistic drama, memorized scenes, various acting exercises and audition pieces; all are presented in the classroom. This course is a prerequisite for Theater Arts 1.

Theater Arts 1 (P)

This yearlong class fulfills the UC Fine Arts requirement. Theatre Arts 1 explores the art of the actor through acting process and performance. Each student discovers what is encompassed in the history of drama and the challenges of the dramatic profession. Coursework includes assigned readings, memorization of scripts, writing and performing of short plays, and lecture notes. The Course also surveys the history of drama and theatrical development. Students experiment with and apply different acting techniques and styles appropriate to each area of study. Students critique theatrical productions, successfully applying the terminology of evaluation. Students focus on the sense of ensemble and the special qualities needed for a collaborative arts experience. UC/CSU approved

SF Players (P)

This advanced course focuses on dramatic presentations of fiction, drama, poetry and music performed for a variety of audiences. Public and community outreach performances are required. All class members participate in festival and special performances with additional rehearsals required as needed. All students participate in the CSUS Lenaea Festival with original and scripted materials. This course may be repeated for credit. UC/CSU approved

Intermediate Dance Techniques

This intermediate dance class is designed for students interested in improving their dance ability. SF Apprentice Dance Company

This year long course satisfies the UC requirement for Fine Arts. This upper intermediate dance company increases technique and performance skills through studies in multiple dance genres. Major choreographers and dance performers are studied through written and visual materials. Students create and perform original choreography through group collaboration. Students have several performance opportunities that include the Winterfest Dance Concert. Students enrolled in this course may request a PE waiver for one semester. UC/CSU approval pending

SF Dance Company (P)

This yearlong class fulfills the UC requirement for Fine Arts. This class enables advanced dance students to develop their understanding, appreciation, and artistic expression through dance.  Students will advance their skills in ballet, lyrical, modern, tap and jazz techniques, as well as develop their own choreography. Stage presence and confidence are vital for a performer and students will work on enhancing these techniques. By working on body flexibility, strength, endurance, balance, coordination and relaxation, students will strengthen technique, projection dynamics, memorization skills and confidence. Local diocesan schools will be invited to the class for dance art enrichment programs. This company will study and prepare for he annual Winterfest Dance Concert. Company members will also participate in competitions and workshops during the Spring semester. Students enrolled in this course may request a PE waiver for one semester. Troubadour Choir

This introductory level semester class focuses on the performing of beginning level literature from selected eras of music. Basic training in interpretation, rehearsal techniques and performance will be emphasized. In addition, the students will learn relevant theory and history of the music performed. Required rehearsals and performances are scheduled by the director. The course serves as the prerequisite to year-long choral music classes.

Chamber Singers (P)

The chamber singers at St. Francis focus on performing intermediate and advanced level literature from selected eras of music. Training in interpretation, rehearsal techniques and performance will be emphasized. In addition, students will learn relevant theory and history of the music performed. Required rehearsals, performances, and competitions are scheduled by the director. This performance group represents St. Francis and the diocese in the community of Sacramento as the primary singing ensemble with many scheduled events. The course may be repeated for additional credit. UC/CSU approved

Prerequisite: Audition and teacher recommendation. Student must have the ability to sing at an intermediate level; one to two years experience or equivalent private instruction.

Jazz Ensemble (P)

Jazz ensemble performs material from various historical Jazz idioms, including Swing, Ragtime, Blues, Dixieland, Latin Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Rock and Funk. In addition to performance and rehearsal, students will achieve awareness of the history and events of jazz music and the theoretical

components of group playing and improvisation. Students will have the opportunity to create and record their own compositions in the style under consideration. UC/CSU approved

Concert Orchestra (P)

The Orchestra is an intermediate class. Musicians will be trained in reading notations, rhythms, and standard literature. They will also be trained in the musical techniques of rehearsal and performance. Each student will be graded on the ability to perform as a contributing cooperative member. The director schedules the required performances. The students study the beginning elements of music theory and ear training. This yearlong class fulfills the UC requirement for Fine Arts. Chamber Orchestra (P)

This is an advanced level ensemble performing as the music representatives of St. Francis in many school events and venues. The Chamber Orchestra will train in the interpretation and the period style of many musical eras. In addition to the techniques of rehearsal and performance, the student will be graded on the ability to perform as a contributing, cooperative member, responsibly improving the level of the ensemble in every aspect. The director schedules required performances and competitions. The students will continue to study music theory with an emphasis in sight singing, ear training and basic written theory. UC/CSU approved

Prerequisite: Audition only. Chamber Orchestra is limited to 25 members.

Solo & Ensembles

Course ID: 171

Students enrolled in this yearlong guided independent study class work through their particular medium as a soloist and/or member of an ensemble. The one-to-one instructional format requires that the student arrange to meet with the instructor at a mutually agreeable time outside her regular class schedule. Students are instructed in standard literature, performance technique, and stylistic interpretation. In addition, students learn the history of the music performed and the relevant theory. Class members are expected to contribute to St. Francis and the community-at-large through participation in Liturgies, musicals and other venues. Students are required to attend rehearsals, performance concerts, and competitions. This course does not meet the UC Fine Arts requirement. The course may be repeated for additional credit.

Prerequisite: Audition and teacher recommendation. Student must have the ability to sing at an intermediate-advance level with three to four years' experience of participation in a group or private lessons. This course is taken concurrently with a choral or an orches

AP Music Theory (AP)

Course ID: 170

This Advanced Placement class is intended to fulfill the first-year music theory requirements of a college class. A major component of any college music curriculum is a course introducing the first-year student to musicianship, theory, musical materials, and procedures. This course emphasizes harmony, integrating aspects of melody, texture, form, musical analysis, elementary composition, history and style. Other skills include dictation, sight singing, intervallic identification, and basic keyboard knowledge. All students enrolled in this course are required to take the AP Music Theory exam in the spring. UC/CSU approved

Applied Arts

The Canticle (Yearbook)

This course broadens students' understanding of the media while contributing to the SFHS archives through development of The Canticle, the school yearbook. Methodology consists of creative lab experiences, layout, recording, and reporting. Goals include stimulating students' creativity, strengthening their value of commitment, and assuming responsibility for a final product. This course may be repeated for credit.  Note: Yearbook requires some after-school hours.

Prerequisite: Students must have the recommendation of her present English teacher. Sophomores & Juniors must have an "A" in English. Seniors who are signing up for yearbook for the first time must have at least a "B" in English; involvement in school activities, strong writing skills, InDesign computer skills preferred; may be repeated for credit.
