World Geography & Non-Western Cultures (P)

This is a beginning social studies course for secondary level students, which serves as the first semester of a three semester World History survey. Students develop geographic literacy and an ability to link geography and its effect on human culture, with an emphasis on non-western history and culture. Students learn map reading as well as research and writing skills, while developing an empathetic socio-economic awareness of non-western culture. This course not only requires student mastery of the narrative flow of history of the non-western world, but also develops basic analytical and presentation skills. There is a special emphasis on the interpretation of history as a universal discipline: a field of study which requires familiarity with the entire range of human behavior, including politics, diplomacy, economics, social relations, technology, science, religion, literature, and art. As the follow-on course to "World Geography and Culture," this course emphasizes the development of western European culture and institutions and Europe's relationship with the non-western world. This is a survey course of the social, economic and political history of the United States from colonial times to present day. Honors US History (HP)

Honors United States History is a chronological survey course covering the period from Colonial America (1607) to contemporary America (2000). The Honors program in United States History is designed to provide students the analytical skills and factual knowledge to deal critically with the problems and issues in United States History. Students will learn to assess historical materials, their relevance to a given interpretive problem, their reliability, and their importance, and to weigh the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship. UC/CSU approved

Prerequisite: Must be recommended by teacher based on your Hon. Am. Lit. writing exams, a 3.7 GPA, minimum 52 on Verbal PSAT and must have taken World History (P)

Honors US History (HP)

The Honors US History course is designed to challenge advanced students and to prepare them for AP social studies courses. The focus of this course is centered on United States History from colonization to the present. Honors students will be expected to complete research-based assessments (completing a comprehensive term paper in the fall semester), outside readings, and document analysis. Emphasis will be given to critical thinking skills and using historical perspective. The course will also include essential economic, cultural, civic, and geographic concepts. Note: This course has been submitted to UC for Honors credit. UC/CSU approved

This course analyzes government and politics in the United States. It examines the philosophical and constitutional bases of U.S. government, the beliefs and behaviors of citizens, the mechanisms that allow citizens to organize and communicate their interests, the structure of national, state, and local government, the processes of an participants in public policy formation, and the development of individual rights and liberties. This year long course analyzes government, politics, and economics in the United States and prepares students for the United States Government and Politics Advanced Placement exam. It examines the philosophical and constitutional bases of U.S. government, the beliefs and behaviors of citizens, the mechanisms that allow citizens to organize and communicate their interests, the structure of national government, the process and participants in public policy formation, and the development of individual rights and liberties. This course integrates economic decision-making as well as economic analysis of economic concepts such as supply and demand, trade, fiscal policy, monetary policy, and government revenue and spending with the understanding of United States government and politics. Advanced placement United States History is a chronological survey course covering the period from Colonial America (1607) to contemporary America (2000). The Advanced Placement program in United States History is designed to provide students the analytical skills and factual knowledge to deal critically with the problems and issues in United States History. Students will learn to assess historical materials, their relevance to a given interpretive problem, their reliability, and their importance, and to weigh the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship. Students will be prepared to take the AP U.S. History exam offered by the College Board. All students enrolled in this course are required to take the AP US History exam at the end of the year. Economics (P)

This course will enable students to use economic concepts in a reasoned, careful manner in dealing with the personal, community and national economic issues students confront or will confront. It emphasizes decision-making, and focuses on the economics helpful to the average person as well as preparation for university work. The tools, such as supply and demand, graphing, trade, fiscal policy and monetary policy, of the economist do, in fact, help the student analyze economic problems in the same manner as economists. This course integrates good citizenship with the understanding of economics, and thus serves as an excellent elective paired with Civics in the senior year. UC/CSU approved
