Women Who Behave Rarely Make History: Women In Literature” with Susannah Nelson.  Susannah is a well-respected university English professor from the Sacramento area and the Campus Minister at Christian Brothers High School. Susannah will take us through a delightful, interactive presentation of women who impacted literature! Join us for a thoroughly entertaining evening!

  • A brief look at a few women writers – their life and their work – who have shaped not only the landscape of literature for women, but have also provided a clarion call for society in terms of the role of women.
  • An opportunity for those gathered for the talk to participate in and experience a bit of reader’s theatre as we bring the words of women authors to life.
  • A creative writing moment for those gathered for the talk, while working with a partner, that will end in a new piece of women’s literature, specifically a two-voice poem.

$5 per person. Proceeds benefit the SFHS Scholarship Fund.

SFHS Alumnae Association Plans a March Tea Party for Mercy McMahon Terrace Seniors

On Saturday, March 11th, from 2 to 3PM, the St. Francis High School Alumnae will be throwing a party. But this won't be just any party, this one will be a Tea Party, and it will be for Seniors. The party will be held at Mercy McMahon Terrace, the only Catholic Assisted Living Facility in Sacramento, located on 3865 J Street, across from Sacred Heart Church. The alums will provide assorted teas, as well as little sandwiches, and scones, and finger foods. Charles Hollingshead, a local master guitarist, has offered to play back ground music during the tea party. All attendees are encouraged to wear hats just for fun. It will be a quick but fun event for about 25-30 of the residents.

“Cracking the DaVinci Code”
February 15, 2006 • 7:00-9:00pm • SFHS Theatre
Fr. John Folmer

The next presentation of the St. Francis High School Alumnae Association Speaker Series features Fr. John Folmer's fascinating discourse, “Cracking The Da Vinci Code,” on Wednesday, February 15, 2006, from 7:00 to 9:00pm in the St. Francis High School Theatre, 5900 Elvas Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95819.

"The Da Vinci Code," Dan Brown’s fourth novel, was published by Doubleday in April of 2003 and by December it appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list.  And there it stays, week after week, 26 months or 110 weeks, and counting, the world’s best selling adult novel and a modern global phenomenon. With the movie version starring Tom Hanks soon to be released, Random House recently announced that it was planning to print more than five million copies of ''The Da Vinci Code'' in three paperback versions beginning in March.

This work of fiction is a murder mystery and a paranoid thriller filled with romance, conspiracy, quest, chase, art history lessons, religious symbology lectures, historical revisionism, postmodernist deconstructionism, religious exposés, and anti-Catholic screed.

The secular press loved it and showered glowing praise. The Christian religious press hated it and damned it as shockingly irreverent and simply idolatrous. Is it a brilliant synthesis of myth, archetype, historical fact, and fresh interpretation that challenges the assumptions underlying Western civilization as we know it? Or is it, in the words of Umberto Eco, “a nineteenth century fairy tale equivalent of Pinocchio and Little Red Riding Hood,” a fraud and a hoax?  How much of the "The Da Vinci Code" is actual history, how much is legend ancient or newly minted and how much is contemporary humbug?

Does anyone really care? Ought we take the book seriously? Ought we take its author seriously? Does it matter?

St. Francis High School is located at 5900 Elvas Avenue, Sacramento. Although there is no charge for the workshop, Free-will donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the St. Francis Scholarship Fund.

“Messages from God: Lessons in Dreams”
January 18, 2006 • 7:00-9:00pm • Theatre
Sr. Diana Francis, RSM & Sr. Rita Irene, RSM

St Francis High School’s Alumnae Association kicked off their 2006 Speaker Series program with “Messages From God:  Lessons in Dreams” presented by Sisters Rita Irene and Diana Francis, RSM, Wednesday, January 18, 2006 in the  SFHS Performing Arts Theatre.

Dreamers for a combined total of over 97 years, Sisters Rita Irene and Diana Francis bring to fellow dreamers the experience drawn from working with the famed Unitarian-Universalist minister and one of the leaders in the movement for dream group work, Jeremy Taylor. Using this knowledge, they have led dream groups in workshop settings at retreat centers and at various high schools throughout the Sacramento Diocese.

There is no such thing as a dream with only one meaning—come discover the wealth in your dreams and the invitation to greater wholeness and communion with the Divine.

This workshop covered

  • a brief thumbnail sketch of dreaming throughout history;
  • definitions of dream-time terms;
  • more focus on archetypes and symbols in dreams;
  • tips on helping people remember dreams and help for building their own dream “dictionary”;
  • working within a dream group: rules, sample dream;
  • perhaps working a dream with the group
  • Questions and Answers

Understanding Dreams, Perspectives from the Ancients through Modern Times, A wonderful essay by Gail Bixler-Thomas encapsulating a brief history of dreaming.

Our Dreaming Mind, Written by Robert Van De Castle, this book discusses dream techniques, theories, and historical perspectives.

God Speaks to Us in Dreams and Visions, Written by Mary Ann Getty. Getty’s book is thorough on the subject of dreams and how they relate to us in “the world of faith and hope.”

Dreams are unique to and a personal experience of each dreamer because the images and symbols are grounded in the individual’s lived experience and culture. Therefore, be wary of books or sources that claim to interpret the images and symbols in your dreams. There are, however, some universal images that occur in dreams; these can enrich and add to the meanings of your dream.

4th Annual Evening with St. Nick at the Moral Values Program (MVP)
December 6th, 2005

The SFHS Alumnae Association again shared the spirit of St. Nick with the children of MVP. The evening included a crafts program, gifts for all children from Santa, pizza and caroling. Fifty children received gift bags from Santa after painting wooden ornaments and making pipe cleaner ornaments to decorate their Christmas tree. MVP offers in-home sanctuary, moral support and assistance to youth living in failure, violence, poverty, abuse, or neglect. Several alums helped assemble the gift bags containing donated items from alums and St. Francis staff. Twelve alums, two past parents and one current student, along with the President of St. Francis High School, helped with the party. The alums also brought cookies for dessert. Pictures of each child with Santa were taken by Molly Emslie, class of 1981 and staff person at SFHS. Patty Suter delivered these very special photos on Tuesday, December 13th so each child would have it to take home. Thank you to all who made this wonderful evening possible.

3rd Annual Jerry Poole Memorial Alumnae vs. Varsity Basketball Game

The 4th Annual Jerry Poole Alum vs. Varsity game, held the Friday after Thanksgiving, was a huge success. Joining past and present hoopsters together we raised over $300 for the SF Scholarship Fund. In a challenge of skill and spirit, the SFHS Varsity team defeated the Alums 67 - 52, evening the score at two games a piece. Coached by Vic Pitton and Assistant Coach Mike Rosa, the Varsity used pressure defense, physical play and long-range shooting to take command early. Twenty-three Alums, spanning three decades (three players from the 80's, five players from the 90's and 15 players from 2000 -2005) returned for the game. Coached by Missy Anderson '87, the Alums got off to a slow start but made the game fun and entertaining in the second half. With a lot of heart and hustle, the Alums cut the score to twelve but would never get any closer.

Once again, the SF Booster Club hosted a wonderful BBQ following the game. Our thanks to John Hartman, Booster Club President, Jerry Flynn, BBQ coordinator and their faithful gang of dads (and even some daughters) for sharing their evening with us. Also special thanks to the Poole family for supporting this event.

Alums Out Play Varsity Water Polo Team

On the day after Thanksgiving, 12 alumnae, home for the holiday or away from the office for the morning, played the varsity water polo team. In a back and forth game, the clock ran out on the varsity team and the alums won by a score of 8-7. A good time was had by all and it appears this will become an annual event.

Alumna Memorial Mass

On November 15th at 8:00am, the Alumna Memorial Mass was celebrated in our SFHS chapel. Fr. Ed Pepka and a handful of SFHS alums prayed together for 155 of our departed sisters. It was a beautiful service.
