Timberlake Wertenbaker's take on the Cinderella story, The Ash Girl, opened the 2007-2008 Arts season. This play is a rich folk tale with all the expected ingredients: a glass slipper, charming prince, and stepfamily and, of course, the royal ball. However, this imaginative play is much more a study of a young girl's coming of age. The journey to the ball is fraught with danger as the ash girl faces her fears deep in the dark and treacherous forest and ultimately finds her own happiness. This fantasy's message speaks directly to young women today. Written by one of England's outstanding contemporary playwrights The Ash Girl is an important play for all ages.
