Othello
On the Road with the SF Players
(Troubadour Tribune December 2007 - January 2008)
On November 7, 2007, members of the SF Players performed selected scenes from William Shakespeare's classic tale of jealousy and revenge, Othello. This was the concluding event of The Globe Academy, a collaberative project with UC Davis/Mondavi and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre London. During spring 2007 members of the group had attended Mondavi workshops and Mrs. Eisenstein spent a summer residency at the Globe Theatre in London. On September 13 Globe Theatre instructor Adam Coleman spent a morning working on the project with the cast.
Students from 12 schools spanning the elementary through high school presented a shortened version of the entire play. The day began at 9am with a walk-through of the performance, dress rehearsal followed by lunch, the final performance and a concluding pizza party in the Mondavi lobby. Everyone was impressed by the commitment of the teachers and students. Patrick Spottiswode, the Director of Globe Education, expressed to Mrs. Eisenstein his delight that so much of the Bard's text remained intact. It was a very busy day and exciting experience for everyone involved.
