This is an important and exciting year for the Class of 2010 as they make decisions about their future. The college application process is here and the Guidance Center provides a variety of activities designed to help our seniors throughout the schoolyear.
In addition to classroom presentations and workshops, the Guidance Counselors will meet individually with each senior to discuss her individual planning needs. Parents are welcome to make appointments as well.
The College Application Process
As juniors, students should have
- met one-on-one with their counselor to discuss their senior year schedule of courses, and
- briefly reviewed information relating to the overall college research and application process.
As they begin their senior year, students should already have identified which colleges they wish to apply to in the fall. Be sure to read the St. Francis College Handbook and try some of the recommended college search engines.
The fall is a busy time of year as our seniors prepare for the college application filing process. Seniors can take advantage of the following guidance services:
- in-class college counseling
- individual college counseling appointments
- frequent e-mail announcements about college visits in the area, college fairs, and additional college-related information
- on-campus College Application Workshops during community lunch
Reminders to Seniors:
College Admission Decisions
Graduating seniors must update their Naviance Family Connection account as soon as college admission decisions are known. All colleges you have applied to, and/or are planning to attend, should be input into Naviance.
Statement of Intent to Register (SIR)
Deadline: May 1, 2010
Most colleges and universities require all admitted students to submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to the institution the student has chosen to attend next fall. Financial aid offers often do not arrive until mid April, thus it is imperative that students weigh their choices carefully, but quickly, after April 15.
Awards & Scholarships
Deadline: April 30, 2010
We ask students who receive an award or scholarship from any college or outside organization (even those colleges that she will not attend) to please make a copy of the award notification and turn it in to counselors. Please also enter this information in Naviance under Scholarships. This information is necessary to create the Senior Awards Assembly program.
Community College Applications
Deadline: April 1, 2010
All seniors planning to attend community college should complete an online application by April 1. Students are also encouraged to take the assessment exams and attend an on-campus orientation session in order to receive priority registration. See your counselor for questions or assistance in this area and pick up your copy of “Answers for Transfers” a complete guide to the transfer process by the University of California.
Mid-year Transcripts
Transcripts including coursework from the seventh semester are sent to schools that students designate on their Mid-Year Survey. It is important that students continue to work hard in their classes during the final semester, as colleges look closely at the work done just prior to beginning their college careers. It is possible for a college to rescind an offer of admission if a student does not show the same level of success that she displayed in previous semesters.
College Applications
Many private schools and state universities continue to accept applications late into the spring. If a student would like to apply to a college after the application deadline, she should see her college counselor.
