Prepare Now for 2010-11!

Academic Decathlon Travels back to the 1930's!

Academic Decathlon is a competition that pits teams from different high schools against each other. Students are tested on the subjects of Economics, Art, Music, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science, andSocial Science. In addition, each team member gives a planned 4 minuteSpeech and a 2 minute impromptu Speech, sits through a 7 minute Interview, and has 50 minutes to write an Essay. Finally schools match head to head in the Super Quiz.

Our topic for this year (2010-11) is the Great Depression, so get ready to visit migrant workers with John Steinbeck and jazz it up with Duke Ellington!

Regional Competition Results
(Troubadour Tribune Apr-May 2009)

The St. Francis Academic Decathlon, "AcaDeca," team competed against several hundred students from 23 high schools for the 5th year in the Sacramento County and regional competition on February 7, 2009. The topic for this all-day event was focused on Latin American history, literature, economics, music and art. Students competed in math, prepared and impromptu speaking, and essay writing and were also interviewed by a panel of judges. The Super Quiz, a public jeopardy-like competition, complete with cheering sections, tested students' knowledge of evolutionary biology.

The St. Francis team placed 13th out of 23, improving last year's score by 100 points. The only senior on the team, Mondrea Vaden, ranked in the top ten rankings in nine of the ten events and she was eighth place overall in the Varsity division. Mondrea has competed for four years.

Congratulations also to the top scorer on the team, Lauren Gonzalez, and the top freshman, Lauren Redd. Twenty-eight SFHS students scored among the top 10 in various events. Lauren Gonzalez, Rachel Liu, Mondrea Vaden, Bianca De Sousa, and Maureen Webb were the top five St. Francis scorers.
