  • Principal's Message (9/22/17)

    Dear Families,

Over the last six weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to see several of our Troubies in action in the classroom, in our Season Sampler, and on the volleyball court. All I can say is that we have an exceptional student body that strives to excel in everything they do.  We are truly blessed with our students’ God-given talents and the contributions they make to our school community.

At St. Francis, our commitment as an institution is to educate young women to live full, responsible, and meaningful lives, and to inculcate a love for God’s creations, while helping to create a better and more peaceful world. We obviously could not do what we do without your support, involvement, and dedication to sustain this wonderful educational experience for your daughter(s).

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the abundance of your blessings.

St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us!

Pax et Bonum (peace and goodness),

    Elias Mendoza

  • Principal's Message (9/15/17)

    Dear Families,

As we finish the end of the fifth week of instruction, I want to recognize the fantastic work our girls are doing both in and outside of the classroom. Every time I see them out and about, they are positive and filled with energy.

Settling into the routine of school and extra-curricular activities, I thought it would be important to remind you to discuss with your daughter(s) the importance of finding balance in her busy schedule.  As you are aware, our Troubies challenge themselves with rigorous academic coursework, athletics, student clubs, and a host of other activities. Please encourage your student(s) to find time to breath and decompress, as it will provide her with the coping skills necessary to be successful throughout the year.  As we get closer to the end of the 1st Quarter, an important skill for any student to learn is to ask early on for assistance so she can feel confident in her academics and activities. We want to ensure our Troubies utilize the various support systems we have in place at St. Francis, such as asking teachers for assistance, signing up for tutoring, and working with their Guidance and/or our Wellness counselors.

Thank you for being proactive and helping us develop strong, confident young women.

St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us!

Pax et Bonum (peace and goodness),

    Elias Mendoza

  • Matching Gifts Support St. Francis!

In this season of supporting our annual fund, you can make your financial gift to St. Francis Catholic High School go even further! As a non-profit organization, St. Francis can and does receive “matching” gifts from a variety of employers in our area. Matching gifts are most frequently dollar for dollar, but may utilize other ratios that match an employee's gift to the non-profit organization. Generally, your employer will have you complete their matching gift form, and you will need to provide them with our Taxpayer ID Number (46-2101392).

This is a great way to make your donation to the St. Francis Fund go even further. Also, matching gifts are counted toward gift society memberships in the fiscal year in which the individual's qualifying gift is received. Questions? Contact MaryAnne Kelly at mkelly@stfrancisfhs.org

  • Principal's Message (9/08/17)

    Dear Families,

I wanted to remind you that tomorrowSeptember 9, 2017, is Holy Bowl. It is an annual tradition in which we support almost five decades of respectful athletic competition between Jesuit and Christian Brothers High Schools.  It is a family event, and I welcome you all to attend with your daughter/s to celebrate our Sacramento-area Catholic high schools.

While it is not a St. Francis High School event, it is an occasion our Troubies use to catch-up and socialize with some of their grammar school friends, as well as an opportunity to showcase our enormous school pride and promote our Catholic education to the broader Sacramento community.

Please take some time to discuss with your daughter/s the importance of being good ambassadors of St. Francis Catholic High School.  As Troubadours, their dress and behavior should be a reflection of our mission and core values, as well as a reflection of their family and community.

I hope everyone has a wonderful time and enjoys this long-standing tradition surrounded by family and friends.

St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us!

  • Resource Outreach: Top Ten Communication Tips

Mrs. Biller, Resource Specialist - Room 314

    Managing Emails:
    1. Delete all emails prior to this academic year (August, 2017).
    2. Create a file folder for each teacher’s email.
    3. Create folders for “Announcements”, “Class News”, and “Keep”.
    4. Objective: Ten emails maximum in Inbox.
    5. Strategy: Do not check between classes. Research shows this decreases concentration and ability to focus on a new task. Option: check when you wake, during lunch break, and one hour before you sleep.
     Managing Meetings:
    1. Create a contact list of each teacher. Include email address and “office hours.”
    2. Include your name and block in the subject line as well as reason for meeting. Start with a salutation, “I hope you enjoyed quality family time over the long weekend.” Continue with request. Ask to meet on a day and block when your schedules sync. Conclude with your name and block.
    3. Prepare by writing down your meeting objectives.
    4. Value time. You can have a productive meeting in 15 minutes. Stay on topic.
    5. Agree on an action plan, and type it during the meeting. Send a thank you note, and attach the action plan.

St. Francis has negotiated a one-year term for coverage on Chromebooks with Worth Ave Group.  This policy covers all damage to the Chromebook with unlimited incidents per year.  The coverage includes accidents, spillage, cracked screens, broken keys, and theft for $0 deductible.  The cost is between $25 to $48 per year, depending on the Chromebook model.  We highly recommend this coverage as the girls are responsible for any damage to the Chromebook and any repairs start at $99.

  • Principal's Message (8/25/17)

    Dear Families,

This week was filled with a lot of activities for students and families alike.  We kicked off the week on Tuesday with a moving presentation by ValLimar Jansen at our Wellness Assembly.  Ms. Jansen is a highly regarded inspirational and catechetical speaker, singer, composer and recording artist.  She was absolutely amazing!

On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of welcoming 31 women to our Annual Legacy Family Breakfast for Alumnae.  These women are grandmothers, mothers, aunts, or siblings of a current Troubie.  Afterwards, we transitioned to a packed gymnasium for our Welcome Mass, where our students and family members worshipped together. During Mass, Ms. Jansen performed with our choir. Her voice made our Welcome Mass even more special. Our Troubies are truly amazing.  The parental support and participation at our first family Mass reflected what it means to be a member of the St. Francis Community.

Last night, we hosted our Back to School Night with a fantastic showing of parents and family members. As I walked around the corridors and classrooms, I was in awe of the participation and commitment of our parents and teachers make in educating our young women.

St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us!

  • Weekly Wellness 8/25/17

By:  Chyrissee Lee & Kym Weinandy, SFHS Wellness Counselors

On Tuesday, August 22, 2017, St. Francis High School hosted its first Wellness Assembly of the year with special guest, ValLimar Jansen.  Ms. Jansen is an inspirational speaker and vocal artist.  She has sung and/or toured professionally throughout the United States, Canada, the UK, Poland, Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Bonaire, Ghana, Israel and Japan. She co-authored a one-woman musical about the life of Ethel Waters that received a special commendation from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

ValLimar's message to your Troubie daughters was one of pure sisterhood, reflecting on the school theme of the year, "I am a Voice for the Voiceless."  She was not only engaging, motivating, and funny, but she also moved us all with her amazing voice.  ValLimar also participated in the school Welcome Mass leading songs and responsive readings. Her time with St. Francis High School was a blessing to our students, staff, faculty and parents.  If you'd like to learn more about ValLimar Jansen, please visit her website at www.vallimar.com.

  • Increased Traffic Beginning Monday and Donation Drop-Off

Increased Traffic Beginning Monday, 8/28/17 - Sacramento State University Begins Classes

On Monday, 8/28/17, Sacramento State University will begin classes.  The traffic around our campus will be much heavier.  Please plan accordingly.

    Traffic & Donation Drop off
Thank you for your continued cooperation and assistance with our traffic procedures. A few quick reminders:
    • Make sure to stay in the correct exit lane (outside lane to turn left, inside lane to turn right), please do not cross over.
    • Do not pick up students in the third lane. This is a fire lane and is used for student drivers to exit. It is unsafe for student pick up.
    • If you have someone new picking up your daughter, take a moment to alert them to the closure of the main entrance (from 2:50 until 3:30 p.m.).
    • If your daughter is not immediately available, you must cycle back to the cell phone lot.  Waiting even for "just a couple of minutes" without your daughter present creates back up.
    • Students may never be picked up in the surrounding neighborhoods.  Students found in these areas will be issued detention.
    Donation drop off
All the kind donations for the various events on campus have been wonderful and greatly appreciated.  A few of quick reminders:
    • Please do not drop off any donation that has not been requested via the MVP opportunities page. Be sure to schedule on the MVP page prior to dropping off.
    • No food items should just be left outside.  If they are left outside, they may spoil before we have an opportunity to store them.
    • Donations should only be dropped off after 2:15 p.m. at the donation site,  which is at the designated armory door.

  • Help Troubies Help Homeless Students!

The offertory collection at next week's Welcome Mass (8/23/17) will benefit homeless children at Next Move. Donations will be collected during Mass. Cash or checks are accepted. Donations will be used to help purchase supplies for students using the Children's Service Room. Reflecting on her Next Move volunteer experience, Senior Christian Service Leader, Marisa Yamada, wrote:
Serving at Next Move is a great way to make a big impact on homeless children. Volunteers work hands on with children, teaching them how to read and write and helping them on their school homework. In addition to homework, volunteers help and participate in arts and crafts activities, playing dolls or Legos, and even video games. It is in the Children's Service room where the kids of the shelter gather, learn, and play with one another, while their parents are taking classes how to get back on their feet. The most meaningful experience that I have had at Next Move came from a little boy I was helping learn how to read. After a few weeks of sounding out letters and words in books, he was able to successfully identify and sound out many words. This moment is very important to me because it truly showed me how much impact and help I can provide to a growing child. My Next Move experience has inspired and motivated me to continue serving at the shelter. Next Move is a great, comfortable, and welcoming environment, which makes it both easy and fun to serve there.

  • Principal's Message (8/18/17)

    Dear Families,

We had a fantastic start to the new academic year! I enjoyed seeing all of our new and returning Troubies walk onto campus on Tuesday morning. Our young women filled Serra Court and our corridors with such positive energy. I know we are going to have a fantastic year.

Additionally, as you may have noticed, the academic year began on the feast day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15th). It is an important date on the liturgical calendar, as it commemorates the death of the Blessed Virgin’s passing into eternal life.

As we begin this new academic year, I pray the Virgin Mary keep our St. Francis community safe, and to enlighten us with hope and compassion.

St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.

Pax et Bonum (peace and goodness),

    Elias Mendoza

  • Watching The Solar Eclipse Safely

    Watching The Solar Eclipse Safely

As you have probably heard, there will be a full solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st, with
prime viewing time during our community lunch break.

While watching a solar eclipse can be awe-inspiring, it can also be harmful to your sight. Here
are some guidelines that NASA has shared to keep your eyes healthy and safe while viewing the
    eclipse.

Never attempt to observe any eclipse with the naked eye. Failure to use appropriate filtration
may result in permanent eye damage or blindness! Sunglasses cannot be used in place of solar
    viewing glasses.

When viewing an eclipse, you must keep your eyes protected at all times. One method is to use
eclipse glasses or hand held solar viewers. These are made with special purpose solar filters. To
use, you need to stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before
looking up at the bright sun. You should only glance at the sun. Never look for prolonged periods
of time. Then look away and remove your glasses. Never take your special filters off when still looking at the eclipse!

An alternative method for safe viewing of the partially eclipsed sun is pinhole projection. Cross
the outstretched, slightly open fingers of one hand over the outstretched, slightly open fingers of
the other. With your back to the sun, look at hour hands' shadow on the ground. The little spaces
between your fingers will project a grid of small images on the ground, showing the sun as a crescent during the partial phases of the eclipse.

A solar eclipse is one of nature's grandest spectacles. By following the rules put out by NASA
you can safely view and have memories for a lifetime!

Information adapted from Dr. Anacleto Nick Gutierrez and Associates.
