Basketball Resets Single-Game Scoring Mark in Win

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis basketball team shattered the school record for points in a game with 99-54 in a win over Monterey Trail on Friday.

“The energy, effort and intensity was there,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “We are really learning how to rebound and how to go after our missed shots. It is really making a huge difference.”

The team broke the school record of 94 points set vs. Ponderosa on Feb. 21, 2008 and it was just the fifth game of 90 points or better in school history.

Time ran out on triple digits but it was a fun night for the whole roster.

“If there was a minute left, we would have gone for it but we did not want to embarrass anyone,” said Pitton.

On the strength of a 35-point first quarter that started with a 7-0 run to open the game, the Troubadours cruised Friday night with the only thing in doubt was whether they could eclipse 100 points.

Sophomore Jackie Koerwitz led three players in double figures with 21 points. Senior Julia Razo connected for 19 and classmate Janae Fairbrook had 17 in the win. Junior Marlee Nicolos scored eight and grabbed a team-best tying 13 rebounds. Logan Kelly also had 13 boards and added seven points.

St. Francis (11-7, 5-1 Delta) led 50-26 at the half and then put up 29 in the third to put 100 points in reach. The bench came in as Pitton was able to play his entire roster multiple minutes in the contest.

“I know they can play and they know they can play,” said Pitton. “They work so hard in practice it is good to get these rewards.”

Junior Anne McDaniel had a career-high six points, hitting two three-pointers in the fourth quarter.

“It was really fun to get a lot of good shots up and get the momentum from playing,” said McDaniel. “Everyone was cheering on the bench. It was such an exciting feeling.  I have been waiting to hit a three this season.”

Junior Izzy Quiniola added a career-high five points to the school-record total, eclipsing her season point total in the game.

St. Francis hosts Grant on Tuesday to close out the first half of Delta League play.
