Capital Cross Challenge Results

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis cross country teams each finished third in their respective races at the Capital Cross Challenge at Haggin Oaks Golf Course on Saturday.

Senior Sydney Vandegrift had the top finish on the day for the Troubadours, placing third in the varsity seeded race in 18:01. Teammates junior Sophie DeBenedetti was 21st in 19:02 to cross the line second on the team, while sophomore Haley Silva was third in 26th in 19:26. Sophomore Emma Hollenbach was 33rd in 19:21. Senior Alana Reyna was the fifth scorer for the Troubadours in 19:22 and 34th overall.

“It was pretty good,” said senior Alana Reyna. “My game plan was to go out conservative and pick it up each mile and stay close as a team because it is the most important thing today.”

Freshman Hanna Hekkanen was sixth just three seconds back in 36th overall.

“The team did pretty well and I could see everyone throughout the race,” said Hekkanen. “The first mile was hard. I was trying to get my breathing right. I thought I did well the last mile.”

The Troubadours were third overall with 104 points behind second place Vista del Lago (101) and team winner Campolindo (79). It was the third race of the week for the team over the last eight days.

Junior Morgan Watson finished sixth in the Open Girls race helping St. Francis to a third-place finish behind Bella Vista and Davis. Senior Teresa Lee recorded a Top 20 finish in 17th in 14:06.

In the Frosh/Soph race, the trio of sophomores Nicole McBride (13th, 13:24), Audrey Reyes (14th, 13:25) and Grace Harrison (15th, 13:28) with freshman Madie Fahey was fourth in 14:16 and Lilly O’Gara crossed 42nd.

St. Francis travels to the Clovis Invitational next weekend for a test run on the state championship course at Woodward Park.
