Lacrosse Falls to Davis on Late Goal

DAVIS, Calif. – The St. Francis lacrosse team got a pair of goals by senior Rachel Wick and junior Jade Borg but fell on a late comeback by the Blue Devils Thursday night.

“We are not playing as a team quite yet,” said Head Coach Julia Southard. “The season is long so we have time to make progress but we are out there individually right now and that will not work against a strong opponent.”

St. Francis trailed early 3-1 as the Blue Devils jumped out on the Troubadours. After a timeout, St. Francis rallied to get back in the game eventually tying the game at 5 at the 11:17 mark after back-to-back goals by Borg.

“I like the resilience,” said Southard. “Any successful team will need to be resilient. We had that in the first half. We have to figure that out for two halves.”

The two rivals exchange goals over the rest of the half before the Troubies went ahead before the break on a goal by Wick off any assist by Sophia Goroina, who added a goal and assist in the half.

“It was a good feeling to get that in right before the half and we had the lead,” said Wick.

Davis (3-0) tied the game at 7, one of four ties overall in the contest, but St. Francis added their only goal of the second half to lead 8-7. The Blue Devils eventually tied the game and took the lead on the fifth goal by Alex Agnew.

“We have to be consistent with everything we do,” said Wick. “We know we can be a consistent team but we just have to work harder.”

Thursday’s game was a non-league game. The teams will meet again on April 24 at Mather Sports Complex on Senior Night for the regular season league finale.

“The bright side is we get to be hungry for over a month,” said Southard. “Every day I will remind them of the game during practice because it does not feel good.”

Sophomores Grace Barger and Tara Keene each added goals, as well as freshmen Gorona and Maggie Price. Maggie Pinkston recorded five saves.

St. Francis will host Gunn on Saturday at 5 p.m. for Senior Schedule Poster Night.
