Soccer Loses Close Battle 2-1 on the Road

DAVIS, Calif. – Senior Savannah Tijerino-Santos scored to give St. Francis a lead but Davis answered with two goals to pull out a 2-1 victory on Thursday night.

“We played them last Friday and lost 4-1 and we played tonight on a rainy night and lose 2-1,” said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “They are very good and they are at the top of the league for a reason. But we battled them and anytime you play them you get a little better because they are so fast. I feel very good.”

Tijerino-Santos broke open a scoreless game in the 38th minute, breaking through the Blue Devil defense and scoring her seventh goal of the season.

“Savvy is such a hard worker,” said Robinson. “That goal was classic hard work. They made a bit of a mistake in the back and she was on them. She then tucked it away. That is what hard work does and she did a great job.”

Davis (14-0-1, 10-0) answered with less than 20 seconds left in the half to the tie the game at the break. The winning goal came in the 55th minute and St. Francis was unable to answer.

“We scored against them last time and they get on back within five minutes,” said Robinson, referring to a 4-1 loss last week. “As we get more mature and disciplined, it is the big five. The first five within a game and first five after goal on any side is when you really have to buckle down. We did better.”

The game was contested by both teams in front of a crowd that sat through heavy rain at the start of the contest.

“We had some good team defense and we hustled and at times we chased but mostly we battled,” said Robinson. “We have played twice and scored both times. We are improving. I am very proud of our character and how hard we played in a professional and classy manner.”

St. Francis hosts two games next week starting with Elk Grove on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The Booster Club will provide the annual Booster Que for all players, coaches and fans from both teams. The Troubadours will collect canned food and non-perishable goods at the contest. All food collected will be donated to the Central Downtown Food Basket.

“The Boosters create community by providing a meal not only for us but our opponents,” said Robinson. “It is one way we can help our local community by bringing a canned food or non-perishable items to the game. We will donate the food to the people that need it as we feed our local community. It is something that St. Francis does naturally and hopes Elk Grove High School embraces and participates as well.”
