Soccer Opens Delta League Play with 7-1 Win over Grant

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Grace Barger scored twice as the St. Francis varsity team cruised to a 7-1 victory over Grant to improve to 6-2-3 overall and win their third straight. The win extended the unbeaten streak by the team to five games.

“We got off to a really good start and really worked as a team today,” said Barger, about the 6-1 first half. “A lot of people scored which was really good. We got to work on the things we have been working on in practice. It was fun.”

Barger scored the first goal to put SF up 1-0 off an assist by Lindsey Porter. Ella Sloss connected for the second goal from an AJ Tanner assist while Lindsey Porter made it 3-0 before Grant scored its only goal of the game.

“I think the communication today was key,” said Sloss.

The Troubies extended the lead to 6-1 before the break as the three goalkeepers held the Pacers in check.

Overall six different players scored in the game, including goals by Alexis Soloaga, Anne Ayotte, Taylore Givens and Porter.

Barger connected on her second goal in the second half on an assist by Molly Branigan, who saw her first action after her transfer.

Emily Billena and A.J. Tanner each added two assists to help the winning effort.

St. Francis travels to Pleasant Grove on Thursday in a 4 p.m. start at Cosumnes River College. Fans can expect to pay a fee for parking. The JC Gold team will play in the second game at 5:30 p.m.

“I am expecting a challenging game and hopefully we can all come together,” said Barger.

The JV Red team also was victorious on Tuesday, posting an 8-0 win over Grant with hat tricks by Larkin Stephenson and Marcela Ferero-Pretto.
