Soccer Ties Davis in Delta League Match

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior goalkeeper Sydney Galvan had 15 saves to help St. Francis tie Davis 0-0 Thursday in a game at Granite Regional Park.

“I am absolutely proud,” said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “It was a great team effort. They have some big timers on their team. We pressured them and sometimes they went went through three defenders but it was our defending forward that got it.
That is what separates us. We have a great team chemistry. We work at it and we played for each other today.”

Davis entered the match undefeated in nine league matches (8-0-1) and had not lost in 17 games. The Blue Devils had defeated the Troubadours 5-2 at home earlier this season.

“This was St. Francis playing for St. Francis today,” said Robinson.

Galvan played both halves in the net, securing 15 saves in the game that featured the nationally-ranked Blue Devils (19th overall and eighth in the state) and their talented roster.

“Syd played the best half she had all year and the full 80 minutes,” said Robinson. “She was solid, confident and made key saves for us.”

St. Francis had several chances in the game but faced some tough saves as well as unlucky balls off the cross bar and post.

“The keeper made some great saves and we still had a chance or two,” said Robinson. “Our attacking third work created some dangerous chances. We are in a good place.”

The Troubies created seven shots in the game, including a pair by AJ Tanner, who served a pair of balls into the box. In the best chance of the game, Tanner’s pass off a free kick was headed towards the goal by Grace Barger but the Davis keeper tipped it over the goal.

“We had a positive attitude coming out,” said AJ Tanner. “Our transition was better than it has been and it really helped. We got the ball back and made great passes.”

Galvan said the performance invigorated the team for the stretch run towards the playoffs.

“It felt amazing,” said Galvan. “We wanted to hold them down and get a shutout. Everyone was working for each other and risking themselves for the better of the team.”

St. Francis plays at Elk Grove and Sheldon next week.
