Junior Scores for Third Consecutive Game

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Janae DeFazio scored a goal and contributed two assists as the St. Francis soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over Monterey Trail on Tuesday afternoon.

“I am really proud of Monterey Trail,” said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “They have a few girls that absolutely have jets. We scored some really nice goals in the first half to break open the game but we were still having to defend the entire field.”

DeFazio scored the first goal of the game off an assist by Anne Ayotte to give St. Francis a 1-0 lead.

“The back line was playing pretty high so I stayed with them,” said DeFazio. “Anne (Ayotte) played me the ball and I took a touch and hit it over the goalie.”

DeFazio made another run down the left sideline and setup Taylore Givens for a tap in goal in front of the net to increase the
lead to 2-0.

“I tried to beat the girls and find the best opportunity,” said DeFazio. “I saw TG and played it across.”

DeFazio now has six goals and four assists on the season and has scored in three consecutive games.

“It was a great pass and I saw it and stuck my leg out,” said Givens. “And it went in.”

Givens scored her fourth goal of the season, ranking fourth overall on the team.

Sophomore Grace Barger scored the third goal of the half off an assist by DeFazio.

“This week we are trying to work hard at practice and the games are getting progressively harder as we play everyone a second time,” said Barger. “Hopefully we can keep winning.”

St. Francis was held scoreless in the second half but also kept their sheet clean as Kim Riley and Rachel Huber combined for the shutout in the goal.

“We did not score in the second half but they only got on our side twice,” said Robinson. “We had some great chances to score and played some nice soccer in the attacking third. We really tightened up the back.”

The Troubies (10-4-3, 5-2) travel to play at Grant on Thursday 3:30 p.m.

“We need to keep playing at a high level with both PG and Davis next week,” said Givens.
