SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team swept its opening Delta League match against Pleasant Grove, posting a 9-0 victory in the league opener for both teams.

“The team is really excited to get on the court for the first time,” said senior Marisa Fat. “It was the first league match and we were really happy to come out with a bang. Everyone finished and supported everyone on the court.”

Fat was perfect in her match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ella Peterman at No. 5 singles. Kiya Jackson also went 6-0, 6-0 in her match at No. 6, posting the win over Surina Marwaha. Myra Anwar, Adithi Benush, Alisha Anwar and Kyla Jackson also won in straight sets for SF.

“We have a really special lineup this year,” said Fat. “Our team is deep all the way from No. 1 singles to No. 3 doubles. The top six are all close in skill level and have close matches against each other. But we are here to support each other against another opponent.”

The three doubles teams were also victorious in straight sets. Senior Cameron Parra and freshman Izzy Askar won by the score of 6-0, 6-0 at the top doubles spot.

“We played really well,” said Parra. “We had to work hard to stay consistent and make our points.”

Askar is one of three freshman who played in the lineup on Thursday, joining Alex Evans and Alisha Anwar.

“Overall we did a really good job and limited our unforced errors,” said Askar. “Our serves were pretty good and Cameron hit some pretty good aces. We were both really confident at the net.”

St. Francis (4-0) returns to action on Tuesday with a rivalry match against Davis at 3:30 p.m. The SF Booster Club will be on hand to serve the team’s annual Booster Que for all fans, players and coaches.

“We want as many people as possible to come out,” said Fat. “Davis has always been one of our biggest rivals and a super-strong team. We know they are going to have a deep lineup as well. Tennis does not always get the support but we hope the free food will help get people out. It will be a good time no matter what.”
