SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Sydney Vandegrift opened the season with a win in the 3200 meters Saturday at the Sacramento State High School Classic at Hornet Stadium.

“I was very happy it was not raining today and to come away with the win,” said Vandegrift. “It helps build up my confidence. It was a good opening time for the season.”

Vandegrift ran in second for the first half of the race before taking it out.

“I felt out the weather and it was windy so I decided to draft for the first mile to not use up my energy pacing other,” said Vandegrift. “It threw me a little off my pace because we were going a little slower than I wanted to. But it is all about racing tactics and then I decided to run on my own.”

The Troubadours also got a pair of third-place finishes by sophomore Meghan Ladd in the pole vault with a clearance of 10-6 in her first action of the season, while freshman Reyna Johnson placed third in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.68 in her first prep action in a St. Francis uniform.

Vandegrift returned to run the double with a fourth-place finish in the 1600 meters, clocking a time of 5:18.23.

Several other Troubadours had busy days on the track. Junior Chanel Grimes joined Johnson, Isabelle Grassel and Amanda Roina in the 4×100-meter relay to place seventh in 51.28. Grimes was sixth in the 200 meters (27.28) and 11th in the 100 meters (12.90), while Grassel was 14th in 12.95 in the 100 and jumped 15-11 in the long jump to place seventh. The 4×200-meter relay (McGahan, Labrie, Roina, Rudis) was eighth overall.

Senior Yahsmeene Duffey finished seventh in both hurdle events, clocking a 17.10 in the 100m hurdles and 50.28 in the 300m hurdles. Isabelle Rudis cleared 4-10 to lead three competitors in the high jump, while Sarah Healey represented in the shot put and discus events.
