SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team posted a straight-set 25-18, 26-24, 25-22 win over No. 10 seed Roseville to advance to the second round of the Division II Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

“I thought we did play well,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “I thought we played aggressive and I was really happy with the defense. It was some of the best defense we have played and I thought Kelsey (Grover) did a good job involving lots of hitters that kept them off balance with holes and blocks we were able to hit through.”

Grover, a junior, had 23 assists in the contest. Senior Ashlynn Fresques led the team with 13 kills.

St. Francis won the opening set 25-18 to take the early advantage. The Tigers rallied in the second to force a match point at 24-23. Wright then substituted sophomore Aubrey Kenny, wo promptly served three points and made key digs as the Troubadours pulled out the set to lead 2-0.

“She had a great year at JV and was solid with her serve and her defense,” said Wright. “She has had four great days of practice with us. I knew she could do it. I wanted Aubrey’s defense and I knew it would come down to it at the end of the set.”

Kenny would also see action in the third set in a key moment, bringing a spark off the bench as SF clinched the match with a 25-22 win.

“I believed in her and told her to take a deep breath and go for it and she did,” said Wright. “I was really pleased for her.”

St. Francis will play No. 2 seed Granite Bay on the road on Thursday. The Grizzlies were a 3-0 winner over Vintage.

“It is exciting,” said Grover. “We played really well tonight. We need to play like we did tonight on Thursday and have a lot of energy and play as a team.”

Game time is set for 7 p.m.
