SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Alexa Edwards had a double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs as St. Francis upset Pleasant Grove 25-20, 25-23, 25-18. The Eagles entered the match 20-2 on the season and undefeated in Delta League play.

“I really liked the team I saw tonight,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “They stayed composed and within themselves and did not get frazzled because it was noisy in here tonight. They followed the game plan, played some great defense and we had kids diving all over the floor. Every player made plays.”

St. Francis (20-11, 7-2) had four players with double-digit digs led by junior Carly Simpson with 20 on the night. Senior Kelsey Grover recorded 10 digs, while junior Madelyn Schildmeyer had 12 to go with 34 assists.

“I thought Mady did a fantastic job running the offense tonight,” said Wright. “She made their middles move and was unpredictable.”

Senior Claire Schutz notched 12 kills as the Troubadours hit 22 percent. Schutz and AIyu Aimufua each had two blocks.

“Winning tonight really gave us the burst of energy we needed,” said Aimufua. “Pleasant Grove has been a big competitor for us so to take them in three proves to us we can do a lot more than we think we can.”

St. Francis took the first set 25-20, opening the match with tone-setting win after being swept by the Eagles on the road earlier this season. The Troubies then closed out the second set 25-23, becoming the first league opponent to win two sets against Pleasant Grove, a team that has lost just six sets all season.

“We talked a lot before every set to keep a level head and not get too excited,” said Aimufua. “We stayed really consistent and made sure we played our game.”

Looking to close out the match, the Troubadours fought off a few rallies by the Eagles to close the match out with a 25-18 win in the third.

“We have to keep working hard in practice and hitting the ground,” said Wright.
