SACRAMENTO, Calif. – They entered the gym as superheroes and left as winners as St. Francis volleyball posted a 25-9, 25-17, 25-14 win over Monterey Trail on Senior Night.

“It was really fun to win our last (regular season) home game,” said senior Ashlynn Fresques. “We played really well. It was been really fun to improve with everybody. We have good momentum and we going into the tournament on Saturday.”

Fresques had a team-best 12 kills and 15 digs, while classmate Nina Sanfilippo added 11 kills in the win.  Junior Claire Schutz recorded nine.

“I thought I was going to be really sentimental about it but I was really excited to be on the court with my team and having fun,” said Sanfilippo. “I had more fun than I have had in a really long time. It was phenomenal.”

Senior Abby Fitzgerald led the team with 22 assists and junior Emily Davis recorded a team-best 21 digs.

“I am kinda emotional,” said Fitzgerald. “I have been playing here since freshman year and it is weird that is was my last game in this gym. It was a really good game and we played well. It was super fun.”

The seniors ran into the gym to the Superman theme and were honored before the game with their parents. They have little time to rest as the Troubadours host their annual Super 8 volleyball tournament on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. The Championship bracket starts at 3 p.m. after morning pool play.

“It is a very fun tournament,” said Sanfilippo. “We will get a lot of reps at this tournament. I am excited for this weekend.”

The tournament includes Branson (21-6), Campolindo (18-8), Christian Brothers (16-7), Granite Bay (25-7), Oak Ridge (27-2) and Whitney (16-9). St. Mary’s was a late drop from the field.

 “If we carry the momentum we had tonight, we will do really good at the tournament,” said Fitzgerald.
