Four Players Selected for Volleyball Optimist All-Star Game

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Four St. Francis senior volleyball players have been selected to play in the 2014 Optimist All-Star game on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. at El Camino High School.

“It was such an honor to hear I was selected and to know I was one of the top players in the area,” said senior Ashley Sutter, who will play for the South team. “It was exciting. We are all hoping for a good game. I think we have a good chance to get the win.”

The Troubadours chosen include Lizzy Corfee, Marissa Gollnick, Kyle Green and Sutter.

Sutter, who is from Rocklin, led the Troubadours with a team-best 613 digs, the second-best total in the section and 10th overall in the state of California. She also recorded 42 aces during the season. She notched a season-high 30 digs in three different matches during the season.

Gollnick, who is from Elk Grove, led the team with 1,023 assists on the season, the fifth in the Sac-Joaquin Section while averaging 8.7 per set (10th-best in the section). She signed with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to play volleyball next season. She earned all-tournament honors at the Mitty Invitational and was an All-Delta League selection.

Green, who is from Gold River, led the Delta League with a 437 kills during the season while averaging 3.7 kills per set, the second-best mark in the league. She ranks seventh in Division I in kills (29th in the state). She had 24 games of 10 or more kills during the season, earning selection to the Delta League first team. She has signed with UC Irvine.

Corfee, who is from Granite Bay, was selected to the All-Delta League team. She ranked second on the team 233 kills while hitting 20.5 percent. She recorded four games of double-digit kills including two games with a season-high 12 (Elk Grove, Davis). She has decided not to play in the event.

St. Francis went 30-12 on the season, finishing second in the Delta League. The Troubadours lost in the semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs to eventual champion Pitman.

St. Francis alumna Chloe Hakim was named the MVP of the 2013 Optimist game. She now plays at UC Irvine.
