Freshmen Scores Six Goals in Win over Roseville

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis Freshman Savannah Tijerino-Santos scored six goals Friday night against Roseville. It was a career-high for Tijerino-Santos and the third time this season she has scored three or more goals in a game after recording hat tricks against Bella Vista and Del Campo.

“It was very exciting,” said Tijerino-Santos, who scored 39 goals for her middle school last season. “I try not to be selfish and pass the ball around to let other people score. When you are a forward, it is your job to score for the team.”

She did exactly that in the game against Roseville, starting the scoring early. Tijerino-Santos scored for the first time seven minutes into the game and again at the 16-minute mark. She recorded the hat trick just before half to give SF a 3-0 lead.

But she was not done there. She scored twice early in the second half for her fourth and fifth goals. She completed her scoring in the 79th minute of the contest for her sixth goal of the game, extending the margin of victory to 7-2.

“It feels great and that is going to go on our record as a win,” said Tijerino-Santos. “People are going to notice St. Francis is coming. I like to be intimidating.”

Tijerino-Santos leads the team with 21 goals on the season to go along with seven assists for a team-best 49 points on the season.

The freshmen team is led by Lindsay Mair, a former Granite Bay High School and Pacific standout. The Troubadours are 9-2-1 on the season and finished third in the season-opening Cal Spring Classic JV Tournament.

“I was very surprised how our team pulled together and how well we play together,” said Tijerin0-Santos. “Now that we are developing, I think we are even better playing as a group.”

The Troubies have won six straight and have not lost a game in nine consecutive games.

Tijerino-Santos has scored in nine of 12 games on the season and scored in each of the last seven overall.

Soccer is not the only sport she has starred at this season.

Tijerino-Santos has had a busy year. She also was a standout with the freshmen basketball team that went 21-6 on the season and won three team tournaments. The 5-3 guard averaged 6.1 points per game and recorded four games in double figures. She was named the Defensive Tournament MVP at the Kennedy Tournament.

“It was exhausting,” said Tijerino-Santos. “Basketball season ended and then we had soccer tryouts and the soccer practice. I am really excited about playing soccer. I have been playing since I was eight years old. It is nothing new.”

After a game against Granite Bay today, the Troubadours play three road contests at El Camino (April 11), Bella Vista (April 22) and Del Campo (April 23) before hosting Granite Bay in the season finale. Both Granite Bay games will be played at Mather Sports Center.
