Gregg, Barrett Lead Soccer to Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Anna Gregg scored twice to help St. Francis post a 3-1 victory over Rio Americano in their home opener Thursday.

“It felt so nice hearing the crowd support you,” said Gregg. “To play well and to win for them is unbelievable.”

St. Francis (6-0) and Rio Americano were deadlocked early.

“Our momentum was not really there in the first half,” said junior Hailey Barrett. “But we picked it up in the second half. The message at halftime was that we needed to pick up our intensity.”

Gregg scored early in the second half to give the Troubadours the 1-0 lead.  The Raiders would tie the score on a goal by Katelyn Chandler.

“The first goal was an error by the defense,” said Gregg, who has now scored seven goals on the season. “You can only take what they give you and it was a gift.”

Rio looks to get away with a tie before Gregg scored the go-ahead goal in the second half.

“I got nice ball from Addie (Wallace) down the sideline,” said Gregg. “I saw the keeper coming out and I was able to chip one in. It felt so nice to be up. It was a relief. We want to win at home.”

Bailey added an insurance goal late as St. Francis prevailed.

“It was an interesting goal,” said Barrett. “It went off my thigh but it went it in and that is all that matters.”

“It was really exciting and really fun,” said Barrett. “The crowd made it.”

St. Francis opens Delta League play on Monday at Pleasant Grove at 3:30 p.m.
