SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Maggie Oys committed to play water polo at Santa Clara next year and will sign a National Letter-of-Intent with the Broncos on Wednesday.

“I am very excited to commit to Santa Clara,” said Oys. “It feels really good because I not only do I get to play college water polo, which was a goal and dream of mine, but I get to play in the environment that I wanted.”

Oys will play for play for Santa Clara Head Coach Keith Wilbur, who has led the program for the last 14 years. Wilbur has become the winningest coach in SCU water polo history. He has recruited and coached six Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Americans, led both men’s and women’s programs to their best-ever seasons, including taking the women’s team to the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship game in 2009 and has twice been named WWPA Coach of the Year.

“Santa Clara is a good Division I program with a long-term coach,” said Oys. “They value the student aspect, which I thought was important. They are a good team and play all the Top 20 teams. There is a balance for the student-athlete.”

Santa Cara has produced a 100 percent graduation rate during Wilbur’s tenure and he has coached numerous Wester Water Polo Association All-Academic selections.

“I loved the school and it has a beautiful campus,” said Oys. “I loved the atmosphere there. Everyone is very friendly and there is a community feel. It is something I wanted because I have had that here at St. Francis.”

Oys has been a four-year varsity player for the Troubadours. She has recorded 34 goals on the season, the second-best total on the team, and 14 assists. She scored a career-high 34 goals during her junior season and has totaled 108 during her four-year career.

She will join former teammate and longtime friend Mara Dominguez, who she has known since kindergarten and who hosted her on her recruiting visit.

“She always helped me out and taught me a lot,” said Oys. “We have stayed friends and good teammates. It is funny we started together and now are back.”

Oys has dreamed of playing college water polo since playing with UC Davis players during club.

“They inspired me so much and I looked up to them,” said Oys. “I wanted to play at that level. It is pretty cool that I have gotten there.”

Oys and her teammates continue the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs this week with the goal of winning the section title. It would be the perfect end to her career.

“Personally (I want to) next week to end with me leaving the pool deck proud of myself in how I played and proud of the team,” said Oys. “I have always come out proud to play for St. Francis. If we carry ourselves like we do with pride and play as a team like we have been, it is what I am looking for.”

Oys will participate in the St. Francis Collegiate Commitment celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
