Peters to Swim at State Championships Again, Cal Poly

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Emily Peters qualified in the 50-meter freestyle for the CIF State Swimming Championships starting on Friday, May 20 at the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex.

“It is exciting,” said Peters. “It was a fun meet last year. I am grateful that I can go again and have that opportunity to compete against some fast girls.”

Peters will be swimming at the meet for the second consecutive year and is the only Troubadour in school history to swim at the state meet that started in 2015. She finished 22nd overall last year with a time of 24.24.

Peters, who is from Folsom, qualified via the Sac-Joaquin Section meet, touching sixth in her signature event in 24.23. She tied senior Chloe Mitchell for the top finish on the team to earn consideration, eventually earning a spot when other swimmers scratched from the meet in the top five.  She is seeded 34th overall entering the meet.

“It went pretty well,”’ said Peters of the section meet. “I was right on my best times. The team did really well. We were not expecting to get fourth so that was really exciting. Overall, it was a pretty good year.”

Peters recently committed to swim at Cal Poly for the Mustangs.

“I am super excited,” said Peters. “Both of my parents are alums of the school. I have always looked at that school as an option for me. To have it work out this fall and have the opportunity to swim is really exciting.”

Peters also played volleyball at St. Francis, earning a varsity letter as a junior. But she switched to swimming full-time for the last year and half.

“We got her to come out for swim after going out for volleyball,” said Head Coach Richard Levin. “It has been great to see her fall back in love with the sport she grew up doing, I am so proud of her.”

She will swim for Head Coach Tom Milich, who is in his 10th season as head coach of the Cal Poly swimming and diving program.

“I am really looking forward to college because I feel like I have just met the breaking point for swimming,” said Peters. “I am looking forward to what it may hold (for me).”

The preliminaries begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The meet will be live streamed at http://www.cifstate.org/sports/streaming/live.
