Soccer Celebrates Section Title, No. 1 Ranking by MaxPreps

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis soccer team earned the No. 1 ranking in the state of California and No. 17 national ranking by MaxPreps following their Sac-Joaquin Section win last weekend. The Troubadours ascended to the No. 1 ranking after finishing a 21-3-5 season with a postseason run that included wins over Armijo (4-2), Enochs (5-4), Granite Bay (1-0) and Oak Ridge (1-0) in the SJS playoffs.

St. Francis won their 13th section title in school history and first since 2010.

The St. Francis soccer team celebrated the 2014 season with a postseason gathering of the team, parents and supporters Thursday night. The team received section championship shirts to recognize their successful season.

Junior Anna Gregg, who scored at least one goal in all four playoff games, was the Co-Player of the Year in the Delta River League, helping St. Francis to a second-place finish behind Oak Ridge. Gregg was also named the River Cats Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

Goalie Catie Brown, forward Hailey Barrett and midfielder Rachel Schaefer were named to the DRL All-League first team. Senior goalie Mia Arostegui received the Sportsmanship Award.

Senior defenders Nina Madsen and Ashley Kyalwazi and junior defenders Serena Ramos and Gabby Turnbull each garnered DRL honorable mention honors.

Schaefer was named the Defensive MVP, while Gregg was the Offensive MVP as chosen by second-year head coach Rosella Kelly. Arostegui received the Coaches Award
