WOODLAND, Calif. – The St. Francis soccer team remained undefeated in the Cal Spring Classic with a 4-0 shutout win over Sierra late Friday night. The Troubies got goals from junior Bridget Foy, senior Addie Wallace, senior Savannah Watson and senior Lydia Molitor.

“It was a great showing,” said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “It was a little nerve-wracking in the first game. We got the little kinks out. They were honest early and yet we managed. I am really pleased. We had some great leadership on every layer on the field.”

Anna Gregg scored two second half goals to propel the Troubadours to a 3-2 win over Rodriguez in their season opener. Junior Rhys Wynbrandt scored her first varsity goal to put St. Francis up 1-0 in the first half.

“We came from behind and had to get the game back,” said Robinson of the opening win. “It was really done by calm, savvy play in the midfield getting the game back so we can go forward. Then Anna carried us.”

Wynbrandt opened the scoring with the first goal of the season to give the Troubies a 1-0 lead after the first half against Rodriguez. For Wynbrandt it was a significant achievement in her first varsity game. She sat out last season on the junior varsity unit after suffering a broken leg and ankle in a skate-boarding accident.

“I had a little pressure, took a step and there it was – a big bomb” recalled Wynbrandt, who scored with a laser from 40 yards out. “It was surprising and I could not believe it happened. Now I feel better and confident about the season.”

Wynbrandt was skate-boarding on a country road when she hit a pothole. Trying to stop with her left leg, she broke the leg and fractured her ankle. She had to call her mom to get picked up on the side of the road. The goal helped put closure on the event.

“It was pretty good,” said Wynbrandt, who plays for Cap FC United. “It is what I wanted coming on the team was making it as if it never happened. It was pretty cool.”

Rodriguez opened the second half with two goals to take the lead 2-1 but senior Anna Gregg willed the team to victory with two second-half scores.

In the second game, St. Francis (2-0) score twice in the first half with goals by Foy, Wallace and Watson. They closed the game with a goal by Molitor in the second.

“In terms of growing from game one to game two, we were table to put the ball back on the ground and played towards out strength,” said Robinson. “It was a great team effort and really fun to watch.”

The varsity plays again Saturday morning against Roseville at 10 a.m. with championship games at 4 p.m. for the “A” bracket. St. Francis is the defending champion.

“It felt awesome,” said Watson. “Everyone gets along, likes each other and it is really fun to play.

The freshmen team opened the season with a pair of ties 4-4 against Whitney and 2-2 versus Vintage in the Cal Spring JV Tournament. Anna Huber scored four goals on the night, including a pair in both games, Kelly Kraeger and Anissah Surita also scored in the opening game Friday afternoon. They won their bracket and play the semifinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The JV Soccer team won their second game at the Cal Spring Clasic with a 5-2 win over River City. Freshman Taylor Simpkins had two goals and Michaela Mark, Ariana Avila and Sydney Vandegrift also scored. It was the second goal of the season for Avila, who scored in a 2-1 loss earlier in the day.
