SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Four players scored goals as the St. Francis soccer team posted a 5-0 win over Sheldon Wednesday. It was the second consecutive win for the team, improving the Troubadours to 2-1-1 in league play.

Senior Savannah Watson scored for the second consecutive game, helping St. Francis (7-1-1) to a 1-0 lead three minutes into the contest. Senior Anna Gregg then scored back-to-back goals five minutes apart. She scored the first at the 8:22 mark and connected again 13:38 into the half.

Senior Izzy Chelini added her first goal one minute later.

“It felt really good to get my first goal of the season,” said Chelini. “It is about time. I have been playing forward the whole time. I needed to get that and it was a good confidence booster.”

Rachel Schaefer completed the scoring with a goal later in the half.

“We really needed that especially after Davis,” said Chelini of the big shutout win. “I think it will boost our confidence and we are going to be ready for Franklin next week. They are one of our big rivals. They are one of the best teams in our league. We are ready.”

The Troubadour defensive effort limited the Sheldon attack, while St. Francis was able to control the ball and the pace for most of the game.

“It was great to really work as a team and have everyone have a good game,” said Newland.

“We fixed our proglems from the last few games and really talked and worked together,” said Newland.

Several players will be Las Vegas this weekend, playing for their club teams at a national showcase. St. Francis returns to the pitch for a key game at home against Franklin on Monday at 3:30 p.m.

“Everyone has to come back in shape and healthy from Vegas and work hard together as a team,” said Newland.

The Sheldon contest was shown live online on TroubieTV. Fans can watch the game on demand.
