WOODLAND, Calif. – Trinity Connaughton scored on an assist by Alex Vergera to give St. Francis a 2-1 victory over Napa in rainy and wet conditions at the Spring Classic at Woodland Sports Complex Friday night.

“It was exciting,” said Connaughton. “Alex crossed it in and I was there waiting. I just kicked it in. It was so awesome and exciting. I was so happy I could do it for the team.”

The Troubadours took the early lead on a goal by Anna Gregg, one of three she scored over the two games. Napa tied the game at 1 and the game remained tied until the late goal by Connaughton.

“We continued to push and pressure and they never gave up,” said Head Coach Rosella Kelly. “We are very happy but we still have a long road ahead of us.”

St. Francis won both their games on the opening day of the tournament, including a 4-1 victory over Terra Linda earlier in the night.

The opener started in the midst of the heaviest rain of Friday’s storm, leaving the field soaked with puddles across the pitch.

Terra Linda scored the only goal of the first half on a corner kick but the Troubies came on strong in the second half with four goals.

Gregg opened the scoring to tie the game at 1 and sophomore Meredith Cook put St. Francis ahead for good with her first goal.

“It felt very awesome,” said Cook of her first varsity goal.” It was pretty rough in the first half. The puddles really slowed down the ball. It was tough.”

The Troubadours also got a second goal and an assist from Gregg in the contest. Vergera also had a goal on a header and an assist. Sophomore Hailey Barrett and Nina Madsen both assisted on goals in the game.

“We had good momentum in the second half,” said Vergera.
Kelly was happy with the outcomes, especially under the difficult conditions.

“It was fantastic,” said Kelly. “I knew the goals were going to come. It was just a matter of time. The conditions were so wet and there were so many puddles. It was a sloppy soccer game. They adjusted very nicely.”

St. Francis plays the third game in its Flight against Roseville at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The Flight “A” Championship and Consolation games will be played at 4 p.m.
