Swimming and Diving Finishes Second at League Meet

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – The St. Francis varsity swimming and diving team finished second overall at the Delta League Championships on Friday at Jesuit High School.

“We did not go quiet,” said Head Coach Richard Levin. “We knew we had a challenge in front of us. They did not quit. Davis is a great team and our hats our off to them. We just needed a little more to get it done. We could taste it but we came up a little short this time.”

St. Francis, the defending league champion, scored 582.5 points to fall 15 points short of team champion Davis (597). Franklin was third overall followed by Pleasant Grove and Monterey Trail.

Juniors Elizabeth Fugit and Tatum Roepke both had an outstanding meet on Friday. Fugit was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.52 and second in the 100 back in 1:01.46. Roepke was third in both events with a time of 1:01.11 in the fly and 1:01.66 in the backstroke.

“Those two juniors really lit a fire under everyone else,” said Levin. “Elizabeth blew up both of her races – 100 fly and 100 back. Coming from a lower seed and stepping up and dropping time, it was great to see them step for their team. It was awesome.”

Senior Chloe Mitchell, who signed to swim at Fordham, was third in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.06 and second in the 500 free in 5:07.20.

“Chloe is part of our senior leadership,” sad Levin. “She is known as the team mom and her team leadership will be missed greatly. She helped set the tone.”

Junior Taylor Koewler was the top finisher in the 200 IM, placing fifth in the 2:18.62 and was fifth in the 100 fly in 1:01.56. Senior Emily Peters led the Troubadours in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, placing third in the 50 (24.97) and fourth in the 100 (55.52). Senior Katie McIntee, who signed to swim at San Jose State, was fifth in both the 200 free (2:03.46) and 100 free (55.54)

Senior Laila Akhavi had a personal-best 1:12.81 in the 100 breaststroke to finish third overall.

“Laila’s breaststroke is off the charts right now,” said Levin.

Senior McKenna Peterson was a double finalist in the 200 free (6th, 2:08.26) and 500 free (7th, 5:44.67). She will swim at St. Catherine in Minnesota next fall. Sophomore Emily Bartylla was fifth in the 500 free (5:32.54) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.94).

Seniors Caroline Urkov and Sally Ferguson were also point scorers in their final league meet. Urkov was eighth in the 100 backstroke and ninth in the 200 IM, while Ferguson touched the wall seventh in the 200 free and eighth in the 100 butterfly.

Freshman Hannah Parulan scored in the 100 backstroke (6th, 1:03.46) and 200 IM (7th, 2;20.53) and sophomore Audrey Camarillo was fifth in the 50 free (26.15).

Junior Samantha Gates swam a personal-best in the 100 freestyle, winning the consolation final in 56.47 and placing eighth in the 50 free (26.25). Senior Ally Tambornini tallied points in 100 breaststroke (1:16.37) and 100 freestyle (57.76).

Other finals finishers includes McKenna Schwarz (100 Breast, 4th, 1:13.50), Kayla Wehner (200 IM, 10th, 2:31.24) and Fiona Dodson (50 Free, 9th, 26.65).

The Frosh-Soph team also had a strong performance in finishing second to Davis. Tami Rodriguez won the 50 and 100 freestyle events and Leana Castro won the 100 fly and 100 back to lead the team.

St. Francis will compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships May 12 and 14 with berths in the CIF State Championship on the line.
