Tennis Loses Close Match to Davis 5-4

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a battle between first-place teams in the Delta League, Davis edged St. Francis 5-4 at the Rio del Oro Racquet Club Monday.

“It shows there has been a lot of progress over the season and it is only going up,” said Spector. “By the time we get to sections and playoffs, it is going to be better.”

The Devils came back in doubles, sweeping all three matches to claim the victory. St. Francis, who lost 6-3 to Davis earlier this season, won four of six singles matches and lost the other two in three sets, indicating the closeness of the match.

“I had to stay more mentally tough than I did the first time and I had to focus on my game,” said Spector. “I had to adapt to hers but using my own strokes and not using hers.”

St. Francis got wins from Avery Spector at No. 1, Marisa Fat at No. 4, Annie Gianulias at No. 5 and Abby Benvenuti at No. 6. Spector, Fat and Benvenuti flipped the result in their match this time around.

Davis swept the doubles matches for the second straight time to claim the match.

St. Francis (8-3) lost for the first time in eight matches and dropped to 6-2 in the Delta League. The Troubadours return to action on Wednesday at Elk Grove at 3:45 p.m.
