ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team opened the 2014 season with an 8-1 victory over Pleasant Grove in their first Delta League match of the season.

“We have a super young and talented team,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “We had a lot of nerves today about the match but the girls came out and played really well. The girls were ready to go and wanted to get that first league match under their belts.”

The Troubadours swept all six singles matches in straight sets. Freshmen Kiya Jackson was the first to close out her match with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Daniela Ayala at No. 2 singles. Sister Kyla Jackson posted a win at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-1 over Maddie Akin.

Top returner Avery Spector was strong at No. 1 singles, dropping just a single game in a straight set 6-0, 6-1 win.

“It was awesome,” said Spector of her first match. “I tried to come out strong but I started a little slow and a little safe but I started trusting my shots. It worked to my benefit.”

Freshmen Fat won her opening high school match at No. 4 singles, while sophomores Annie Gianulias and Abby Benvenuti completed the singles shutout.

St. Francis (1-0) also got wins in two of the three doubles matches. Junior Eden Elliott and sophomore Jordaine Tran combined for a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Megan Kahn and freshman Cameron Parra were winners at No. 2.

St. Francis also swept all three exhibition doubles matches. Senior Alyse andre and freshman Amanda Sweeney combined to win their match, while the duos of Stephanie Fong and Kate Neubuerger and Megan McLaughlin and Isabella Roberson also posted wins.

St. Francis returns to the court on Wednesday for their second road match of the week in the first meeting with Davis. Match time is 3:45 p.m.
