Tennis Receives First Round Bye in Section Playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After tying for the Delta League Championship and winning the tiebreaker with Franklin, the St. Francis tennis team earned the league’s top seed and bye for the first round.

St. Francis (14-1) will open play with a home match on Tuesday, Nov. 3 against the winner of the Nov. 2 match between Atwater, the No. 3 seed out of the Central California Conference, and the No. 2 seed from the Monticello Empire League.

The Troubadours are in the half of the bracket with Rocklin, the No. 2 seed out of the Sierra Foothill League. Other teams receiving byes include Oak Ridge (SFL #1) and Turlock (CCC #1).

St. Francis posted a 14-1 overall record (11-1 in Delta) with only loss coming 5-4 to Franklin in league play. The Troubies avenged the loss to the Wildcats with a 6-3 road win, clinching the tiebreaker. 

Led by Head Coach Kristi Spector, St. Francis has won 8 straight matches entering the playoffs. Senior Avery Spector plays No. 1 singles for St. Francis, posting a 12-3 record on the season. The team has not lost at No. 3, 4 or 6 singles all season and also is perfect at top two doubles positions, showing the depth of the roster.

St. Francis will be seeking its 10th section title in school history.

Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Rio del Oro Racquet Club. The winner advances to play on Monday, Nov. 9 in the quarterfinals. Semifinals are on Nov. 10 and finals on Nov. 11.

The Division I champion will be the No. 1 seed, representing the SJS in NorCal playoffs. The Division I runner-up will play at the Division II champion on Friday, Nov. 13 to determine the Section’s No. 2 seed in the NorCal playoffs.
