SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Avery Spector was named the Delta League Most Valuable Player by a vote of the coaches. Spector led the Troubadour tennis team to a Delta League title and the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals.

“It is one of the best things that has happened to me at St. Francis,” said Spector. “It was really awesome, especially in my senior year. It was definitely a highlight of the season.”

Spector finished the season with a 13-4 dual match record and 17-5 overall mark. She was 10-2 in league matches.

“She is a senior so it is bittersweet,” said the elder Spector, who has coached her daughter the last three seasons. “I am super happy for her next chapter but I am sad that I will not get to coach and work with her every day.”

Spector advanced to the Delta League singles championship for the second consecutive season and was a quarterfinalist in the Sac-Joaquin Section Singles draw.

“She was a great leader,” said coach Spector. “She played varsity and singles all four years. She is a team player and a kind person with great sportsmanship. She puts everything on the court every time she goes on. To show that to the younger girls, they can watch her by example and they follow her.”

She opened the section tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Regan Corley of Armijo. She then lost a tough three-set battle with Miriam Timkova of Lodi, a foreign exchange student from Slovakia where she is ranked No. 37 in the country. Spector won the first set 7-5 and the second was tied 5-5 before Timkova closed out the set to tie the match at 1. Timkova won the third set 6-1 to advance to the semifinals on Friday.

Spector was one of three Troubies to earn All-Delta League honors, joining Kiya and Kyla Jackson and Marisa Fat.
