Varsity Soccer Wins Cal Spring Classic Title

WOODLAND, Calif. – The St. Francis varsity soccer team won the Cal Spring Classic with a 5-0 win over Placer Saturday, winning the tournament title for the second consecutive season.

“The real focus was on the small improvements and evolutions,” said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “In game one we came from behind to win. We wanted to tighten up in a few areas and loosen up in a few areas to get us moving forward. The building intensity and team play all over the field is really what got us going.”

Junior Hailey Barrett scored twice in the first five minutes of the game, giving the Troubadours an early cushion.

“It was exciting,” said Barrett, who is one of four team captains. “We went into the game thinking we needed to score early and that is what we did.”

St. Francis (4-0) continued the attack, getting goals by Anna Gregg, Rachel Schaefer and added a fifth goal on an own goal.

“We used our team speed to jump on these guys early,” said Robinson. “It was great. We kept our legs fresh, our energy was good and it did not let down. It is a super group of kids that have been through this before.”

Gregg, who added two assists in the contest, finished the tournament with three goals and three assists including the game-winner in the 3-2 opener against Rodriguez.

It was the second shutout of the day and third in the tournament for St. Francis behind goaltenders Allie Carmickle and Meredith Kaesar. They combined to allow just two goals over four games.

St. Francis reached the finals by sweeping their three pool play games, including a 2-0 win over Roseville Saturday morning. Lydia Molitor and Dulaney Phillips scored to pace the Troubies and earn the berth in the “A’ bracket final.

“It is awesome and gives us a lot of confidence going into the season,” said Schaefer.

St. Francis travels to Christian Brothers on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
