Water Polo Splits Two at Davis Fall Classic

DAVIS, Calif. – The St. Francis water polo team split two games at the 4th Annual Davis Fall Classic Friday. The Troubadours defeated Tokay 8-2 to start the day before falling to San Ramon 15-2 in the second game.

Five players scored in the opening game, including multi-goal games by Jennalyn Barthels, Brinnly Barthels and Lauren Charter. The Troubadours also got goals from Emily Reinl and Maggie Oys.

“I thought we did really well,” said Head Coach Heather Moody of the win over Tokay. “It was good to get everyone in the pool and get some playing time. I think we could have worked better with our movement on offense.”

The second game was not as successful against San Ramon. The Wolves scored six times in the opening quarter and led 11-2 at halftime.

“We were tentative and apprehensive,” said Moody of the start. “When they scored the first two goals in the first minute of the game, everyone took a step back instead of rising to the challenge and saying no more. It is something that we need to work on as a group. When we are down we to have the fight and not let it continue.”

Sophomore Maggie Oys was one of two players to score in both games, joining Emily Reinl.

“It was a wakeup call in the first quarter,” said Oys of the start. “Once we realized what we were against in San Ramon, we had to change gears and get more intense. It is a hard game but is one that you learn the most from and get the most experience. In the end, it will benefit us.”

The Troubadours (10-7) hit the pool for two games on Saturday. St. Francis takes on Leland at 11 a.m. and Menlo Atherton at 4 p.m.
