Michele Frayne
Assistant Coach

Michele Frayne is in her first season as the throws coach at St. Francis High School.

Frayne comes to St. Francis after serving six seasons as an assistant at East Stroudsberg (Pa.) University. She instructed the horizontal jumps, pole vault and multi event athletes. She also served as the recruiting coordinator for the women’s program and supervised 85 athletes in their weight-training program.

Overall, she coached 11 All-Americans, 4 league champions, seven NCAA qualifiers and 80 PSAC qualifiers.


Paul Brust
Junior Varsity Assistant Coach

Paul Brust is in his first season as the Head Junior Varsity lacrosse coach at St. Francis.

Brust played at Novato High School and was part of the 1984 State championship team prior to the incorporation of the CIF. He played at Sonoma State on their inaugural team and then men’s club lacrosse.

He has mentored two daughters through the Troubie lacrosse program, including Ryanne ’15 and sarah ’17. Overall, Paul has been associated with the program since 2012, assisting the program in many areas.


Nick Ledoux
Assistant Coach

Assistant Coach Nick Ledoux joins the St. Francis swimming program for the 2017 season. He began is  swimming career at Rancho Arroyo and CRA, then moved to Laguna Creek Racquet Club, where he began coaching in 2004 as a junior coach. He moved to Rio Del Oro Racquet Club in 2008, where he has been coaching with Head Coach Richard  Levin. .


Renee Montez
Varsity Assistant Coach

Renee Montez begins her first season as an assistant with the St. Francis varsity team.

Montez has coached with the Sacramento Soccer Alliance for the last four years working with teams from U-10 to U-14 and has worked with the Granite Bay Soccer club as an assistant coach and trainer for the U-17 team in 2016.

She has also worked numerous clinics with the Sacramento Republic FC Youth Camps and the Coerver Soccer Clinics (2013-14). She has earned her CYSA “E” and “F” Licenses and the Coerver Youth Diploma.


Hannah Frech
JV Assistant Coach

Hannah Frech will join the St. Francis coaching staff as the Junior Varsity assistant coach for the 2016 season.

Frech, a 2014 graduate of St. Francis, has played the last two seasons at Sierra College. She also participated in swimming, earning All-America honors and qualified for the state meet both seasons.

She was the captain for the water polo team as a sophomore.

Frech scored six goals and recorded three during her senior season with 15 steals, helping the St. Francis team to an appearance in the section championship.


Emily Whalen
JV Water Polo Head Coach

Emily Whalen joins the St. Francis coaching staff as the Head Junior Varsity Water Polo coach in 2016. Whalen brings to St. Francis a strong prep and collegiate background after a four-year career at San Diego State.

She earned Big West Honorable Mention honors and the Coach’s Award in 2013.

She graduated with a degree in sociology in 2013 and plans to work with animals. She has volunteered with the San Diego Ocean Foundation.


Mary Johnson
Assistant Tennis Coach

Mary Johnson joins the St. Francis coaching staff as a assistant coach with the tennis program for the 2016 season.

Johnson was the Head Coach at the University of Santa Clara from 1983-87 after three years as an assistant at UC-Berkeley from 1981-83.  She played collegiately at UC Santa Barbara (1977-79) and UC Berkeley (1979-81), earning national rankings all four years.

She graduated from Berkeley in 1981 and earned her Master’s  in physical education from Cal State Hayward in 1984. She received her Master’s in counseling from Santa Clara in 1988.


Erin Matrenga
Assistant Cross Country Coach

Former Troubie Erin Matranga joined the St. Francis cross country staff for the 2016 season.

Matrenga ran collegiately at USC from 2011-14, earning Pac-12 All-Academic honors in 2012. She was a member of the Trojan Athletic Senate as the cross country team representative.

She graduated from St. Francis in 2011, participating on both the cross country and track and field teams. She placed 32nd at the CIF State Division I Championships in 18:30 as a senior.


Bert Jones
Head Coach

Bert Jones was named 2016 Delta League 2016 Coach of the Year in his first season as the St. Francis Head Golf Coach.

St. Francis golf finished tied for seventh at the 2016 NCGA/CIF NorCal Championships, making the first NorCal appearance since 2013. The Troubies qualified for the CIF NorCal Regional Championships with a third-place finish at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament and won the Delta League title after going undefeated in league play and winning two of the three center matches in Jones’ first season. Three players earned all-league honors.


Amy Sybesma
Cross Country/Track and Field Assistant Coach

Amy Sybesma is in her second season as an assistant coach at St. Francis. She joined the track and field staff during the 2016 season and will assist with cross country starting in 2016.

Sybesma ran four years of indoor and outdoor track at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich.. She competed in the high jump, 200 and  400 meters and relays. She was ranked 30th in the nation for DIII high jump in 2015.


Sean Smith
Assistant Varsity Softball Coach

Sean Smith begins his first year at St. Francis as an assistant varsity coach after coaching competitive softball for the past four years. Since 2013, he and Kevin Warren have coached a highly successful competitive softball team that has placed 3rd and 17th at PGF Nationals over the last two years. \

Sean and his wife Kristi have two daughters: Sydney, who is in the 7th grade and Chloe, who is a freshman at St. Francis.


Sara Brabec
Junior Varsity Softball Head Coach

Sara Brabec joined the St. Francis staff as the junior varsity softball coach for the 2016 season.

Brabec teaches Theology as Jesuit High School and is the Christian Service Coordinator. Prior to Jesuit, she served in previous positions at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Ill., and Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland. She was an assistant with the JV softball program at Loyola Academy from 2014-15.


Julia Southard
Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach

Julia Southard begins her first season with the St. Francis lacrosse program and will serve as the co-head coach with Spenser Brown.

Southard has an extensive coaching background at the collegiate and high school levels. She most recently was the girls head coach at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland from 2013-15. She also established Brick Wall Lax, a recruiting company that advises and guides student-athletes and families on the college recruitment and the selection process.


Rod Jett
Track and Field Head Coach

Rod Jett will enter his second season at St. Francis in 2017 after leading the program on an interim basis in 2016. He brings nearly 40 years of experience in the sport as an athlete and coach.

Jett directed the program to a second-place finish in the Delta League and a third-place finish at the Sac-Joaquin Section meet, while helping the Troubadours qualify student-athletes in four events at the CIF State Championships. The 4×100-meter relay set a school record in finishing 11th, while the 4×400 ranked ninth and recorded the fifth-best time in the state during the season.


Sara Fitzsimon
Varsity Assistant Coach

Sara Fitzsimon joined the St. Francis program as an assistant coach for the varsity program in 2016.

Fitzsimon played at Wheeling Jesuit University from 2011-14 as a center midfielder. She was a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference player in 2014 and team captain. She was also a president and member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years.


Heather Volek Brownholtz
Head Freshman Basketball Coach

Heather Brownholtz is in her second season as the Head Freshman Basketball coach at St. Francis.

She led the team to a 21-5 overall record in her initial season and the team won two tournament titles (DC Elite, Robby Nakamura Kennedy Tournament).

She brings to the program 14 years of youth basketball coaching experience.  She recently coached the Cal Red Raiders eighth-grade boys team, leading the team to a 30-5 mark and three Black Division Championships.


Aaron Rios
Head Cross Country Coach/Distance Coach

Aaron Rios was named the head coach of the St. Francis cross country program for the 2016 season. He had served as the interim coach for the 2015 season, leading the team to a top-10 finish at the state meet.

An experienced cross-country and track and field athlete and coach, Rios began his coaching career in 2010 as a distance coach at Foothill High School in Sacramento. In 2011, Rios served as Head Coach for the girls cross country team at Del Campo High School and went on to head up the track and field team.


Jessica Hamby
Varsity Water Polo Assistant

Jessica Hamby joined the St. Francis staff as the varsity assistant coach for the water polo program in 2015 and will coach her second season this fall.

Hamby helped coach the Troubadours to the Sac-Joaquin Section title in 2016 with a 6-5 victory over Davis in the Division I title game. St. Francis was well represented on the Sac-Joaquin All-Section teams selected by the area coaches, earning three first-team members and three second-team choices. Eight players earned All-Delta League status.
