Q&A with Heather Moody: Olympic Memories

St. Francis Head Water Polo Coach Heather Moody has been a veteran of USA Water Polo for the last 16 years. She was a two-time medal-winning Olympian (2000 and 2004) and coached two medal-winning teams (2008 and 2012). She is entering her fourth season on the staff at St. Francis.

Barthels and Oys Earn NISCA All-American Status

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Former Troubadours Jenna Barthels ’16 and Maggie Oys ’16 were both named to the 2015-16 NISCA/Speedo Girls Water Polo All-America honors for their play from the 2015 season.

Barthels, who will be attending Cal-State Northridge, was one of 14 players named to the Water Polo All-America second team and among 16 Californians on the first two teams. She led the team with 47 goals and 70 assists on the season, earning All-Section and All-Delta League first-team honors.

Fall Tryout Information

Hope everyone had a great summer and is excited to get back on Monday. Here is some basic tryout information for cross country, golf, tennis and water polo for next week. Murbach ‘14 Named WCC All-Academic

Alumna Cheryl Murbach ’14 was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team, one of three from the Gonzaga women’s rowing team to tie for league-high honors. She is a sophomore Human Physiology major with a 3.79 GPA. The Zags won the West Coast Conference title and will compete in the NCAA Championships.

Water Polo Alumnae at Aggie Shootout

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis hosted the Aggie Shootout Saturday but it felt like a St. Francis water polo alumnae gathering with the large number of Troubadours students, alumna and parents in attendance. The Cal Head Coach even called it “National St. Francis Day” at the pool.

Five alumnae were representing three different schools at the Aggie Shootout including Brinnley Barthels ‘14 (Pacific), Lauren Charter ‘15 (UC-Berkeley), Marisa Kolokotronis ‘13 (Brown), Kat Menz ‘12 (UC-Berkeley) and Brooke Vowell ‘12 (UC-Berkeley).

Water Polo’s Maggie Oys Featured Comcast’s Game On!

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior water polo player Maggie Oys is featured on Game ON! SportsStars Magazine Star of the Week.

Game On, hosted by Anna Kagarakis from 95.7 The Game, is a bi-weekly local sports magazine show dedicated to female athletes. The unique series includes stories that cover just about anything and everything in the world of women’s sports. From youth soccer to various high school sports, from local Olympians to extreme sports, and stories that defy age restrictions and stories that truly champion female athletes.

Six Water Polo Standouts Earn Academic All-America Honors

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Six St. Francis water polo players earned Academic All-America honors from USA Water Polo, the organization announced. Student-athletes needed a 3.6 GPA on a scale of 4.0 to qualify and those that received a 4.0 GPA were honored as outstanding achievers. 

Maggie Oys garnered Academic All-America honors with outstanding achievement designation for qualifying with a 4.0 GPA or better for the second consecutive season.

Three Water Polo Players Garner All-Section First Team

LODI, Calif. – The St. Francis water polo team was well represented on the Sac-Joaquin Section teams selected by the area coaches, earning three first-team members and three second-team choices, Overall, the Troubadours had eight student-athletes earn all-section accolades.

Seniors Jennalyn Barthels, Maggie Oys and Ally Tambornini were each named to the Sac-Joaquin Section first team, while Barthels and Oys earned consideration for All-America team consideration.

Water Polo Advances to Section Finals

MODESTO, Calif. – Seniors Sam Reinl and Jenna Barthels each scored three goals to help St. Francis advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section finals with a 10-3 win over Lodi in a semifinal on Tuesday.

Seniors Kira Chavez, Ally Tambornini, Julie Zanobini and Maggie Oys all scored goals in the contest.

Junior Sally Ferguson led the team with four assists and Elle Minor and Maddy Vine combined to allow just three goals on the afternoon.

St. Francis will play Davis, a 13-1 winner over Lincoln of Stockton, at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Woodcreek High School.

Countdown to Signing Day: Jenna Barthels to Sign with Cal-State Northridge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Jenna Barthels will sign with Cal-State Northridge on Wednesday to play water polo for the Matador program next fall.

“The team was amazing,” said Barthels of joining the CSUN program. “They do things together and work well together. They are such a fun group of people. I did not want to leave and I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else.”

Barthels will play for Head Coach Marty Matthies, who is in his second season. He led the program to a second-place finish in the Big West Conference last season.

Oys Commits to Play Water Polo at Santa Clara

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Maggie Oys committed to play water polo at Santa Clara next year and will sign a National Letter-of-Intent with the Broncos on Wednesday.

“I am very excited to commit to Santa Clara,” said Oys. “It feels really good because I not only do I get to play college water polo, which was a goal and dream of mine, but I get to play in the environment that I wanted.”

Water Polo Advances to Section Semifinals

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – St. Francis water polo advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals with a 21-3 win over Enochs Thursday night at Jesuit High School.

St. Francis, the No. 2 seed, out-scored the Eagles 8-0 in the first quarter and 14-1 over the first half to easily cruise to the win. The Troubadours will face Lodi, an 8-7 winner over Woodcreek in one semifinal on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Modesto.

Jenna Barthels scored a game-high five goals for the Troubadours.

Water Polo Hosts Enochs in Section Playoff Tilt
Special Playoff Parking Information

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis water polo team will host Enochs, a 7-5 winner over Turlock, in a second round Sac-Joaquin Section playoff game on Thursday, Nov. 4 at Jesuit High School. St. Francis received a No. 2 seed and enters the playoffs with a 15-7 overall record.

St. Francis is a three-time section champion (2005-06, 2008) and has reached the second finals in each of the last 11 seasons.

Countdown to Signing Day: Zanobini to Play Water Polo at Loyola Marymount

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior water polo standout Julie Zanobini has made a verbal commitment to play at Loyola Marymount next fall and will sign with the Lion program on Nov. 11.

“It has been my dream for a while,” said Zanobini of playing at LMU. “I am so excited to get to continue playing the sport that I love. “It feels great to be a Lion.”

Zanobini has been a four-year player for the Troubadours, helping the team to three consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section finals appearances.
