Soccer Games Postponed for Jan. 10

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – All three Soccer games scheduled for the afternoon against Davis (JV Gold, V) and JV Red (Rocklin) have been postponed due to safety concerns because of the weather. The games will be rescheduled at a later date to be announced. Practices today have also been canceled.

Holy Court Ticket Sales Start Saturday, January 14

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Holy Court ticket sales to St. Francis students, parents, fans and alumna will open on Saturday, January 14 at 8 a.m. (Limit 2 per person). A passcode will be sent to your St. Francis student email account on Friday to access the tickets.

Holy Hoops will be played on Saturday, January 28 at St. Francis starting with the freshman contest at 2:00 p.m. The junior varsity teams will play at 3:30 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 5:00 p.m.

Soccer Ties Pleasant Grove in Home League Opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Savannah Tijerino-Santos scored the lone goal for the Troubadours in a 1-1 tie with Pleasant Grove on Thursday at Granite Regional Park.

“We worked really well and the intensity was there,” said Tijerino-Santos, who scored her third goal of the season. “We were pressing them and did everything we could do. I am proud of my team.”

The Troubadours scored first with the Tijerino-Santos goal off an assist by senior Arianna Avila. The Eagles tied the score later in the half.

Freshman Alexa Edwards Named to MaxPreps Freshman All-American Team

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis freshman Alexa Edwards was named to the MaxPreps Freshman All-American Team. The 25-player team was announced on Wednesday.

“It is a tremendous honor to be named to this All-America team,” said Edwards. “I am really thankful for (Head Coach) Alynn (Wright) for helping me develop this year. I am looking forward to the future.”

Edwards averaged 4.1 kills per set and hit better than 24 percent on the season. She led the team with 526 kills and digs with 425. She was named to the Delta League first team.

This Week in Troubie Sports…

The basketball program opens the week with a tripleheader at Antelope in Roseville on Saturday. Frosh game starts at Noon. The St. Francis junior varsity and varsity teams host Franklin on Tuesday and travel to Monterey Trail on Friday, January 20. The freshman play at Sacramento on Thursday. Soccer (JV Gold and Varsity) plays at Sheldon on Tuesday ad hosts Franklin at Granite Regional Park on Thursday with varsity starting at 2:00 p.m.

Soccer Opens Delta League with Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Lindsey Porter had a hat trick as six players scored in the Delta League opening 8-1 win over Grant.

Sophomore Elise Urkov scored the first goal of the game in the first minute off an assist by Abby Padilla. Padilla then assisted Porter on the first of her three goals. Freshman Marli Berry (Urkov), sophomore Anna Huber (Blakeman) and sophomore Janae DeFazio (Huber) each scored in the half as the Troubadours led 5-0.

Pitton Wins 300th as St. Francis Opens Delta League

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  - St. Francis Head Coach Vic Pitton won his 300th career game at the helm of the Troubadours tonight with a 77-26 win over Pleasant Grove. He is in his 15th season as coach of the Troubadours.

“I appreciate the opportunities I have had and the great teams I have had the privilege to coach,” said Pitton. “The number is just a number. Each one of the victories and the losses has provided a special memory.”

Assistant Coach Maren Christie was on his first team and was part of the victory on the bench today.

Winter TroubieTV Schedule Announced

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The 2017 Winter TroubieTV schedule will include numerous basketball and soccer broadcasts in the winter schedule announced Tuesday.

The JV and Varsity basketball games against Davis on Friday, January 6 will tipoff the campaign that includes at least 12 basketball broadcasts and seven soccer broadcasts. All six basketball and soccer teams will be highlighted at least once during the season and TroubieTV will follow all playoff games for the varsity units.

JV Basketball Defeats St. Mary’s for Title

ANTIOCH, Calif. – Sophomore Gabi Lopez was named the MVP and freshman Akira Cherry was selected to the all-tournament team as the St. Francis JV team posted a 62-61 victory over St. Mary’s to win the Antioch Tournament.

Lopez led the team with 11 points and Azareyah Edwards and Byrnne Burrows each added 10 in the win.

The Troubadours remain undefeated at 11-0 on the season. They return to the court on Tuesday for the Delta League opener against Pleasant Grove.

Freshman Basketball Wins Antioch Tournament

ANTIOCH, Calif. – Mia Fleming-Mullins was named the tournament most valuable player and Hannah Dorsey was named to the All-Tournament team as the St. Francis freshman team posted a 41-34 victory over San Rafael to win the Antioch Christmas Holiday Jamboree.

St. Francis fell behind early 12-5 after the first quarter but rallied to take a 21-20 halftime lead. Dorsey scored six points in the second quarter to help the comeback. The Troubies pulled ahead for good in the third and Fleming-Mullins sealed the game in the fourth quarter with six points in the final period.

Basketball Falls to Miramonte in West Coast Jamboree

OLINDA, Calif. – St. Francis lost to Miramonte 63-53 in the semifinals of the Diamond bracket at the West Coast Jamboree Thursday. The Troubadours will play Elk Grove in the third-place game at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Senior Julia Razo led the team with 11 points. Sophomore Nika Bagatelos and senior Janae Fairbrook each added eight in the loss.

St. Francis (5-5) led 35-27 at the half but Miramonte (11-2) out-scored the Troubies by 18 in the second half led by a 22-point third quarter.

Basketball Wins Overtime Thriller in West Coast Jamboree

ORINDA, Calif. – Sophomore Jackie Koerwitz sent the game to overtime and sophomore Nika Bagatelos hit two threes in the extra period to propel St. Francis to a 69-66 win over Arcata in their opening game of the Diamond bracket of the West Coast Jamboree.

“We were planning on Julia making the shot but I just got (the rebound) and was able to put it in to tie it up,” said Koerwtiz.

Koerwitz, who finished with a career-high 20 points, capped her big night with a buzzer-beating put back to give the Troubadours a chance in overtime to cap the comeback effort.

Soccer Goes 2-1-1 in Tri-Valley Classic

DANVILLE, Calif. – Sophomore Janae DeFazio provided the equalizer and senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hendrickson kept El Camino Real out of the goal to finish the Tri-Valley Classic with a 1-1 tie against El Camino Real at Sycamore Valley Park.

“The last two games – Foothill and El Camino Real – were fantastic opponents,” said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “These last two games were a great test for us. It was team defense, we battled and we had to play faster. There is no doubt in my mind we are better this evening than this morning when we got here.”

Basketball Drops Nike Finale

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Sophomore Lauren Pank scored a career-high 16 points in her second varsity start but it was not enough as St. Francis lost 54-40 to Forest Grove (Ore.).

“It was really fun,” said Pank after the game about contributing. “I am glad I got to help my team out a little bit. Hopefully, I can do more of that in the season.”

She scored 16 points, totaling her season output from the first six games. Pannk hit three three-pointers and went 5-for-6 at the line.

Basketball’s Late Rally Falls Short at Nike TOC

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The St. Francis basketball team fell behind by 14 points in the second half only to pull within a basket before falling 53-50 to Gilbert (Ariz.) Wednesday on the third day of the Nike Tournament of Champions.

Sophomores Nika Bagatelos and Megan Austin combined for 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Troubadours almost came back in a game that looked over entering the final period.

“We started to play good defense and get in the passing lanes and that helped our offense get going and score some points,” said Bagatelos.

Basketball Falls to Familiar Foe in Nike Event

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Just 3.1 miles apart in Sacramento, St. Francis and Sac High met 634 miles away in Phoenix Tuesday in the second round of the Nike Tournament of Champions with the Dragons winning 54-36.

“We did not match their physicality in the first half and their quickness got to us,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “There was a part of the game in the second quarter where we played pretty good. Certainly in the second half we picked it up but offensively we hit just two threes and we have to hit more threes than that.”

Basketball Wins Opener at Nike TOC in Phoenix

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Senior Julia Razo scored a team-best 15 points to help St. Francis to a 51-47 opening round win at the 2016 Nike Tournament of Champions over Chapparal (Colo.) Monday.

St. Francis trailed by seven points in the early minutes of the fourth quarter 42-35 but rallied with an 11-0 run sparked by Razo, who scored six of 15 points in the quarter. Senior Janae Fairbrook added seven points including a big three-pointer during the rally.

Varsity Soccer Ties Rocklin 1-1

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Sophomore Janae DeFazio scored a late goal for the second consecutive game to salvage a tie at Rocklin on Tuesday night. DeFazio scored her fourth goal of the season in the 89th minute off a rebound off the cross bar. The ball was initially served by A.J. Tanner.

Rocklin’s Madeline Morrison gave the Thunder the lead in the 34th minute.

St. Francis (2-1) returns to action at Folsom on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 5:30 p.m.

Basketball Travels to Arizona for Nike Tournament of Champions

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The St. Francis varsity basketball team will open the 20th Annual Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix against Chapparal (Colo.) at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec 19 at the Salvation Army KROC Center.

“I am really excited for the basketball aspect of the trip,” said junior guard Marlee Nicolos. “There is a lot of really good competition so we should grow as a team there. It is also a really big bonding experience for all of us. We get a lot closer after Arizona so I am looking forward to that.”

Volleyball’s Wright Named Delta League Coach of the Year

SACRAMENTO, Calif . – St. Francis Head Volleyball Coach Alynn Wright was named the Delta League Coach of the Year in a vote of her league colleagues. It is the 15th League Coach of the Year honor in her career.

Wright led St. Francis to the CIF Northern California Regional semifinals before the Troubadours lost to eventual CIF Division II state champion Valley Christian. The sixth-seeded Troubadours upset No. 3 seed Whitney in the quarterfinals to advance after defeating No. 11 Windsor in the opening round.
