St. Francis Installs Sport Court in National Guard Armory

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis Catholic High School had new Sport Court installed in the National Guard Armory property this week to replace the decades old red surface that served as the floor in the original gym.

“Since we purchased the National Guard property five years ago, the Armory space has proven to be a useful site for a variety of student activities,” said Athletics Director Mark McGreevy. “This new surface enhances both the utility and the beauty of the facility.  We’re extremely happy with it and are eager for the Troubies to begin enjoying it.  The new floor also adds to our current partnership with Cristo Rey High School and through that partnership it will essentially pay for itself in a little over four years.  We’re so grateful for all those who were able to make this a reality.”

The new surface is the Response HG (High Gloss) Maple select product by Sport Court. It is the official surface for the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Volleyball Championships and USA Volleyball national teams, as well as U.S. Youth Futsal National Championships and the Nike Tournament of Champions in Chicago.

The school was sold the product by Barrett Park, the President of Sport Court Northern California. Barrett’s father sold St. Francis the original “The McDonald’s Floor”.

“The cool connection is going to old customers my father worked with many years ago and it is a time to reboot with some new Sport Court technology,” said Park, who supervised the installation and painting this week.

The surface was installed on Tuesday and Wednesday with the assistance of the St. Francis maintenance crew, athletic department staff including AD Mark McGreevy and several key volunteers including parents Phil Perkins (Gabriella ’20) and Martin Lozano (Olivia ’22).

“It looks and feels like wood without the maintenance,” said Park.

The Armory serves as the main practice floor for the St. Francis freshman basketball team and the Cristo Rey High School boys and girl’s volleyball and basketball programs. It has also served a practice location during inclement weather for our outdoor sports and an optional space for academic testing.”

The floor is made up individual modular pieces that allow for the quick replacement of damaged pieces and only requires basic maintenance. It highlights the continued renovation of the space aesthetically that has included new lights, the relocation of the old scoreboard and upgraded bathrooms.
