Cross Country Sweeps The Other Meet Titles

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Juniors Ariane Arndt and Chase Worthen led the St. Francis cross country team to a win at The Other Meet held Saturday morning at Granite Regional Park. The Troubadours swept all three races at the meet as freshman Sydney Vandegrift and senior Ariel Medina won the Frosh/Soph and junior varsity races.

“It shows we are pretty strong all the way through,” said Arndt of the team win. “We have a lot of good runners. Even without our top two runners, we can still compete.”

Seniors Miranda Myers and Peyton Bilo did not run Saturday while taking the SAT test.

“Ariane had a great race,” said assistant coach Mason Myers. “She had a real challenge ahead of her without our team not having our senior girls out here. The course was fitting for her and she really charged the hills. She put together a fantastic race strategy to be our top finisher today.”

Arndt, who was a standout on the state medalist 4×400-meter relay at the state meet last spring, ran second overall behind Kathryn Loken of Del Campo.

Worthen was third overall in 19:04, while freshmen Ava Nkadi crossed the line sixth in 19:10.

“We all felt better today in the conditions,” said Worthen. “We tried to stick together as a pack and pace off each other and all went at the end. We had a lot faster times than Wednesday. I got a big PR so it was good. We did good as a team.”

St. Francis out-pointed Del Campo with three runners in the top six and five among the top 20.

“We had no idea how we were going to do having some of our top runners gone,” said Worthen. “We were happy we were able to fill their spots on and do well.

Junior Gabrielle Dyer was 13th overall in 19:50 and junior Juliet Batturaro finished 18th in 20:51.

“Chase had a great effort coming off an OK race on Wednesday,” said Myers. “She had a nice rebound to finish off this week of racing.”

St. Francis won the Delta League #1 at the same course on Wednesday in hot afternoon conditions.

The program completed the meet sweep by taking the early Frosh/Soph race behind Sydney Vandegridt and Savanna McGrew finishing first and third overall. Senior Ariel Medina won the JV race was St. Francis swept the top three spots. Isabella Garcia was second and Samantha Gallia was third.

The Troubadours run at the Bronco Invitational next Saturday.
