Cross Country Seventh at Elite Woodbridge Sweepstakes Race

CORONA, Calif. – The St. Francis cross country team placed seventh overall in the elite Bob Day Sweepstakes at the Silverlakes Sports Complex at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Saturday night under the lights.

Junior Izzy Fauria led the Troubadours with a 33rd-place finish in 17:06. Freshman Cate Joaquin was right behind her in 17:07.

St. Francis scored 228 points to place seventh and fourth among California teams. Great Oak, ranked fifth nationally in the preseason, won the meet with 84 points aided by individual winner Tori Gaitan. Desert Hills (Utah), ranked 47th in the preseason by DyeStat, was second with 145, while Granada (Calif.), listed No. 16 nationally in the preseason, was third with 221. Mission Viejo (No. 39) was fourth and South Lake Carroll out of Texas was fifth. Xavier Prep of Arizona (No. 35) was sixth.

Freshman Tatiana Cornejo was the third finisher in 52nd-place in 17:27. Senior Sophie DeBenedetti crossed the line in 17:54 to place 84th and junior Haley Silva was just out of the top 100 at 18:10 (102nd). Sophomore Hanna Hekkanen posted a time of 18:19 (115th) and Emma Hollenbach was 144th (18:47).

The St. Francis entry in the Varsity A Gold race finished fifth overall. Junior Noelle Lynch was 11th overall individually to lead the team, posting a time of 18:33 over the three-mile course.

The freshman girls won the team title in the Division II Gold race, placing their top five in the top 25. Emily Castles was first across the line, second overall, in 18:50. Teammate Claire Silva was third two seconds back in 18:52. Peyton Carson placed 15th in 20:05, while Alexys Jones was 20th in 20:21. Anna Karlshoej recorded a time of 20:26 to place 22nd overall.

The Troubies also took second in the Sophomore Gold race behind Redondo Union (85) with 87 points. Lilly O’Gara was the top finisher in 20:42 to cross 14th overall with teammates Molly Chambers (15th, 20:42) and Allison Prestwich (16th, 20:43) as the trio finished in succession.

SF had a spread of 1:04, the fourth-best team total among the top 10.
