GRANITE BAY, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team dropped its Foundation Game Tuesday night 3-1 at Granite Bay in a rematch of the Sac-Joaquin Section Championship in 2012.

“Our opening tournament and this game shows us what we need to work on,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “My kids don’t like losing. Even though it is a Foundation Game and it does not count, it is pride. But I saw a lot of really good things out of them tonight.”

The Troubadours won the opening set 25-18 before dropping the final three to the Grizzlies. St. Francis led 24-22 in the third set with a chance to take a 2-1 lead but the Grizzles fought back to tie it at 24. It would be tied four more times in the set with the Troubies fighting off three set points before Granite Bay closed out the set 29-27.

Granite Bay took an 11-3 lead out of the gate in the fourth set. The Troubies would cut the deficit to four three times but never got any closer as Granite Bay finally pulled away to seal the match with a 25-16 victory.

The Foundation Game is an exhibition contest whose proceeds support the Section’s A. Dale Lacky Scholarship program. The varsity-only games do not count in a team’s overall record. Last year, the Section awarded 48 scholarships totaling $33,000.

Volleyball returns to action on Sept. 10, hosting Rocklin at the St. Francis Gymnasium with all three levels competing starting at 4 p.m.
