Water Polo Advances to Section Quarterfinals

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – Freshman Kendall Houck scored five times and senior Kayla Wehner added four goals as St. Francis posted a 12-5 win over River City in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Tournament.

“Our focus was making sure we were on the same page defensively, establishing our press and knowing where the ball is so we can help out where we need too,” said Head Coach Heather Moody. “We did a really good job with those and only had a couple breakdowns but we came back focused and fighting for the win.”

St. Francis (11-10) jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter with Houck providing three early goals. The Troubies, who won the section title last season, scored three times in the second to extend the lead to 8-2.

“It went good,” said Houck. “We could have had better passes but our defense was good.”

St. Francis failed to score in the third but held onto an 8-3 lead before adding four goals in the fourth. Seniors Aubree Barr and Frances Barbour combined for three goals in the contest.

“Offensively we used our speed and were finishing our shots,” said Moody.

Senior goalie Maddy Vine had seven saves in the contest to help SF advance to face Lincoln of Stockton, a 22-1 winner over Enochs. Houck added a team-best four assists and four steals. Senior Sally Ferguson recorded a team-best seven steals to go to her three assists on the night.

“It is a good confidence booster heading into Friday’s game because it is going to going to be very difficult,” said Moody.

Friday’s game will be played at Stagg High School in Stockton. Section ticket prices are $6 for adults and $4 for children. The game will be shown on TroubieTV.
