Basketball Falls to Davis at Buzzer

DAVIS, Calif. – Davis senior Caitlin Mazzoleni hit a 14-fott jumper at the buzzer to give Davis a 53-52 victory over St. Francis Monday night.

“I thought the effort was very good,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “They came out with a purpose. We had a little fatigue and we again rushed a few possessions so we had some dangerous turnovers that set the tone for them to get back in the game. They made the shot at end and we did not value the ball enough. Overall, the girls played very well and competed the whole game.”

The winning basket came after St. Francis had re-taken the lead on a Lauren Craig layup with 14.6 left in the game. The Lady Blue Devils missed their first chance and St. Francis rebounded with 2.5 seconds left. But the Troubadours turned it over setting up the winning basket.

Craig finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds to highlight the game for the Troubadours.

“She was dominant and they did not have an answer for her,” said Pitton. “We moved the ball pretty well and stayed within the context of our offense. But sometimes we lost that patience.”

Sophomore Janae Fairbrook had nine points and Angie Ortiz added eight for the Troubadours,

St. Francis led throughout the game until the final minute and looked to hand Davis (18-2, 9-0) their first league loss.

St. Francis (14-7, 4-5) led by 10 at the break after going on a 9-0 to start the second quarter. Davis started cutting into the lead in the second half, hitting six of their nine three-pointers to help the comeback effort.

Mazzoleni and Emma Stenz led the Blue Devils with 15 points each.

St. Francis returns to court on Wednesday against Elk Grove. Game times are 4:00, 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. at the school.
