Basketball Sweeps Holy Hoops Games with Christian Brothers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Susie Rogers scored a game-high 14 points to lead St. Francis to a 60-50 victory over Christian Brothers Saturday night to complete the three-game sweep of the Falcons.

“Susie played an outstanding game from baseline to baseline,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton about Rogers, who scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half.

Fellow senior Isabel Soloaga hit three first-half triples as part of her 11 point night.

“Isabel had a coming out party tonight,” said Pitton. “We have been waiting for this because she is a great shooter. She got rewarded in the most attended game of the year and a big rivalry game. I am so happy for her.”

Soloaga was one of three players in double figures, joining Rogers and Lauren Craig, who contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

“It was so great,” said Soloaga. “It was a big game, great timing and big shots. It was fun. We had a good time. We lost last year so to get the win on our home court was terrific.”

St. Francis built a 10-point advantage in the first quarter, taking a 19-9 lead after eight minutes. They kept the lead at nine entering halftime. The Falcons rallied in the third quarter to cut the deficit to five points at 35-30, raising the pulse of the sold out crowd of 1,200 fans.

“I was debating whether to call a timeout but I thought we could do it on our own right there,” said Pitton. “We ended up getting a home run pass and we were able to stop it right there. We then reasserted ourselves.”

Sophomore Julia Razo scored seven second half points and junior Kyra Huffman added eight in the win.

“Julia had a tremendous second half with some tremendous efforts from everyone else along the way,” said Pitton.

St. Francis improved to 9-4 on the season, snapping a three-game losing streak that included the first two league games this week.

“I am extremely proud of my team tonight,” said Pitton. “I thought they kept their composure pretty well under the circumstances and the two variables within their control they handled very well: energy and effort.”

The varsity team completed the sweep over Christian Brothers (5-10). The freshmen opened the afternoon with a 52-33 win. Nicole Frank scored 20 points to pace the team and open their careers with a win over the rival Falcons.

“They played with a lot of heart,” said freshmen coach Ray Poncini. “We were down 8-4 to start the game but they believed in themselves, had the confidence and fought the whole way through the game.”

Poncini noted the performance of Morgan Kaeser.

“Morgan does so much,” said Poncini. “It does not necessarily show up in the stats. She looks to pass and pulls down a lot of rebounds.”

The JV team jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back in posting a 50-31 victory. Logan Kelly had a team-best 15 points to lead the team.

“We talked about energy,” said JV Head Coach Gary Ender. “It was the key word tonight. We didn’t come out and press or play man to man. We came out in a zone and we were able to put pressure on the ball, get the rebound and get out and run.”

The team led 15-2 after the first quarter and was never really challenged. Marlee Nicolos added 12 points and sophomore Avery Myers scored six points in the win.

“I had great leadership from sophomore Avery Myers and performances by some freshmen,” said Ender. “Logan had 15 points and absolutely controlled the boards. She was very active on the floor.”

St. Francis returns to league action on Tuesday with road games at Elk Grove for the junior varsity and varsity teams. The freshmen return to the court next Friday at Nevada Union.
