Basketball Teams Advance to Tournament Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis junior varsity and freshman teams both won on Friday to advance to their respective tournament championships on Saturday. Sophomore Morgan Kaeser scored 12 points to lead the JV team to a 65-18 win over West Campus, while Brynne Burrows tallied nine points to aid a 32-30 win over Nevada Union.

St. Francis (4-1) jumped out to a 21-9 lead at the Robby Nakamura Holiday Classic over West Campus behind Jorie Keitges’ six points in the first quarter. Kaeser added four as seven players scored in the quarter. Nika Bagatelos scored six of her 10 points in the second quarter as the Troubies held West Campus to four points to lead 36-13 at the half. The defense continued in the second half as Warriors scored just two baskets. Ally Gage scored three times in the third and Kaeser knocked down four buckets in the fourth as the Troubadours cruised to the win.

They will play in the championship game for the second consecutive week, looking for their first tournament win at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Playing in the JV Bronco Bill Tournament, the freshmen (5-0) posted their second consecutive win over an older team. Burrows scored seven of her nine points in the second half as the Troubies held on for the victory. Gabi Lopez added eight points in the win.

After winning the tournament at Kennedy last week, St. Francis will play for the title Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Bella Vista.
