SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Nika Bagatelos scored 17 points behind five three-pointers as the St. Francis junior varsity team posted a 53-49 win over Del Oro to win the Robby Nakamura Holiday Classic at Kennedy High School.

“I am really excited (to win the tournament),” said Bagatelos, who averaged 12.3 points per game in the three-game tournament.. “Last week we played a really good team and a really good game but we lost. We got it back today against a really good team.”

St. Francis lost its only game to Sacramento last weekend in the championship of the River City tournament.

“We had to take care of the ball, not have any turnovers and not foul any more,” said Bagatelos the team’s strategy.

St. Francis (6-1) won its fourth consecutive game, winning the tournament title that included victories over Inderkum and West Campus.

The Troubadours built a lead in the second quarter after the team ended the first quarter tied at 15. They led the rest of the game but had to hold off Del Oro down the stretch.

“We need to keep practicing and get ready for our league games in January,” said Bagatelos.

Sophomore Nicole Frank added 10 points and freshman Megan Austin returned to score eight points. Freshman Jorie Keitges added six points and Lauren Pank scored five in the win.

St. Francis plays in a tournament at Antioch High School Dec. 28-30. They open against Pittsburg at Noon on Dec. 28.
