O’Brine Advances to State Finals in Discus

CLOVIS, Calif. – Senior Kayla O’Brine advanced to the Saturday finals in the discus with a fourth-place finish in the preliminaries at the CIF Track and Field Championships.

“I came in wanting to throw as well as I could,” said O’Brine, who signed with UCSB. “I was just focusing on my form. Going through my three throws, everything felt really smooth and easy.”

O’Brine won her heat with a throw of 142-6 and finished fourth overall among the qualifiers. The Top 12 advanced to the finals on Saturday that will include a cut to nine after three throws.

“It was really relieving to guarantee my spot into finals,” said O’Brine. “It was cool to finish first in my flight and advance to tomorrow.”

O’Brine is competing at her third state championship. She finished 12th last year as a junior.

“I think being here before helped a lot because I knew what to expect coming into it,” said O’Brine.

O’Brine will throw on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
