SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Rachel Schaefer scored a goal and assisted on a second to lead St. Francis to a 2-0 win over Ponderosa Tuesday afternoon to open Delta River League play.

The Troubadours and Bruins battled in a scoreless first half as goalie Mia Arostegui kept Ponderosa out of the net.

“I felt like we had control of the game,” said Head Coach Rosella Kelly. “We dominated more than they did but we could not find the back of the net in the first half. It was our main topic at halftime that we have to finish or it was going to be tough.”

Schaefer gave St. Francis the lead 10 minutes into the second half.

“They have really fast forwards so we had to keep covering everyone and making sure the ball did not escape in the wet conditions,” said Shaefer, who netted her third goal of the season. “I shot it but I did not think it was going to go in. But it did.”

St. Francis (12-1-3) got a second goal from junior Anna Gregg, who scored her 14th goal of the season on a corner from Schaefer. Allie Carmickle preserved the shutout in goal for the Troubadours.

The game was the first league contest for both schools.

“It is nice to beat Ponderosa because they are a tough team that is physical,” said Kelly. “They have a lot of great players so it is always a nice win.”

St. Francis travels to Folsom for a 4 p.m. on Thursday followed by the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m.

“We have to do the same thing and play SF soccer,” said Schaefer.
